CHX - Firecat's AV is very popular around here. However for help making an AV decision check out the following:

It all depends on the user's needs and system. What is affordable for me, may not be for you, what works for you may not work for me etc. As suggested try the AV's tested at AV Comparatives. All of them have trial versions. Trial a few for all of the trial period not just a day or two as sometimes a particular update may cause problems which are not normal or characteristic of an AV and you may get a misconception about a certain product. Generally here in Wilder's people will point you toward KAV or NOD, both are excellent and two of the best, however some people have had problems with both and had to choose the other. Dr. Web is also highly regarded here as well as F-Prot. If nothing else there is a list of 4 to get you started. As you will see from trialing them, each has it's peculiarities and might take some getting used to. If you try NOD please see Blackspear's extra settings thread in the NOD forum. Welcome to WIlder's BTW and enjoy learning how to secure your system here. Best of luck in your trials.

    Hi Guys,

All of the AV's tested at AV comparatives are very good. I think its important to develop habits which make it less likely, to become infected. Things like:

don't open email attachments, don't visit porn. sites, don't P2P or file share.

do use a Hosts file, do use IE-Spyad, or spyware block list, do use spywareblaster, do harden your browser, do use a firewall, do image or backup.

I'm sure I've missed a few here, but developing good habits will make it less likely that & AV will find something to remove.

    Regards

Nod32 and Kaspersky in my opinion but if u wanna go for real fast scanning and light on system resources its nod all the way if u dont mind a little bit of system resources being chewed up then Kaspersky and i believe the detection is just a tad better than Nod32.

if u want the best protection best detection and removel than go for Kaspersky (for detection and removel its the best)

but if u want a much faster scanner much lighter than go for Nod32.

BTW Nod32 has great detection and removel but not as good as Kaspersky:D

Take which one you like more...

For me NOD32, ´cause it has the best heuristics and a excelent overall detection... plus its very light and stable. KAV is a great AV too, but you can use NOD32 and use KAV online scanner (and the others) sometimes...

It was a joke meant for Hammer.;)

About the test (& it's validity) you can read more if you search for it here, it has been debated more than once here (it's quite old) and views are very mixed.:)

I think that you have to test them and see what will works better on your system and feets your needs...

If you want the best, my suggestion is between NOD32 and KAV.

About free ones, that are also very good, try avast! Home or Antivir PEC ;)

There is one definitive answer as to the question of which is the best Antivirus program. It is the one that you feel personally will protect your computer and that gets along with all of your other programs. And the only way to discover which one that is will be to trial a number of av programs and see for your self which one it is. other peoples experiences with an av progran doesn't mean that is the results you are going to experience. Two identical computers will not react exactly the some to identical programs. That is why you should try them your self rather that depend on others experiences.

    let's compare the price:

    nod32(39/yr)+zonealarm(69.9/2yrs)
    Maybe Zonealarm(69.9/2yrs) + Antivir(free)

Norton NIS 2006: $99/2yrs (but could not upgrade to new version after one year)

    Panda titanium $84/2yrs

    Kaspersky KIS: $69.9/2yrs

ETrust IS: $29/yr for microsofe users: http://www.my-etrust.com/microsoft/ ,I had used Etrust Alarm one year free, never infected.(checked by kaspersky and bitdefender). but its firewall is not the newest zonealarm, and I always worry its antivirus.

Macfee IS: last week it was only $40 in the store here. I did not buy it. I had tried MIS2006 one month and then Norton IS 2005, I trust norton firewall more. I like Mcafee VirusScan enterprise 8.0i, I try it two month, it's excellent.

I believe the firewall is the first important fense. I don't know panda titanium firewall, I check it in PC Flank and Sygate it pass all leak test. I enjoy panda's TruPrevent now, with TruPrevent I do not need to install Prevx 1.

:) This is the best advice you will ever get about this subject, be it a "free" version or one you have to pay for. I could not concur more! By the way there are some good "free" version available.

    Thanks
    Wildman

    Well put Wildman!

My Family Machine has McAfee AV and Firewall FREE with my Comcast subscription.

And my PC runs a $19 retail box of EZ AV. I have lifetime upgrade to OutPost FW on this one too.

If we are talking price! I thought I would throw this into the mix.

How could 2 PCs with the hardware and software configured identically not achieve the same detection rate using an AV program configured the same on both machines?

No one said anything about the detection rates not being the same on identically set up machines. But from years of installing software in my computer repair shop I can and will stick with my statement that two identical machines will not run software the same. such as scanning speed for one and Hdd access time by the av will be different, close but different just the same. The way it installes updates can be different. There is no such thing as two identical computers, they may be the same model# but just the difference in the manafacturing quality of the parts will make them react differently.

So, if I understand correctly, you're saying that 2 machines configured the same might have different scanning rates because, for example, of the manufacturing quality of parts. And that this difference would be noticeable?
