Tell something about your Favourite Authors

Hi All ,

Can we have the names of your favourite authors and , maybe , some information about them including names of their major works.

 

Bryce Courtenay ........and he's an Aussie too!

As far as I am concerned , my all time favourite has been George Bernard Shaw - the Irish playwright and one of the founder members of fabian Socialism in UK.

When one of the characters of his play "Pygmalion" is asked whether he doesn't have any morales , he is replied " Can't 'fford them guv'nor , can't 'fford them ".

Prefaces written by Shaw are as famous - if not more - as the plays.In one of them he writes "Those who can , they do - those who can't , they teach."

The sentiments expressed in the plays & prefaces are as valid to day as they were when they were written almost 80-100 yrs ago. He received the Noble Prize in , I think 1924 , which he accepted but the money was donated to the cause of better cultural understanding between England and Sweden.

A truly remarkable man.

Well that's a though one to say..
First of all:
- Frank Herbert-Dune IMO one of the best books i'we ever read
-David Drake-Belisarius series(Eastern roman empire with a twist)
-Lois Mcmaster Bujold-Vorkosigan series
-Erich von Daniken-any book (more scientific approach and the man really has some interesting teories)


I dont want to stop writing

Oh yes and Sven Hassel-dunno if anyone read his books but it was my favourite until i found out he didnt do all those things but all the same great books.

 

Ernest Hemmingway...all the way!
Love his "The Old Man and the Sea"!

 

Of course , "The Old Man and the Sea" is a classic in Hemingway's style "to distrust adjectives" but the writings of Hemingway about his early Parisian days in " The Moveable Feast" are somehow closer to my heart.
