I've tried Netveda Safety.Net a couple of times and although I liked it, conflicts with Objectbar forced me to remove it each time.
I'm no longer using OB so now I've been trying Netveda again and, to get to the point, I have a small problem with it.
Every time I start up the computer it hangs for quite a while and I've narrowed down the problem to Netveda. Eventually everything kicks in but I get a pop-up from Netveda asking for permission for ipcLic.exe to start (not access the net).
I can't work out what ipcLic.exe does. I know it's part of Netveda but it never shows up in the task manager and it never appears in Netveda's component control window. Even when I tell the pop-up to always allow ipcLic.exe, I still get asked every startup and still get the long delay while waiting for it to ask.

Also, I see Netveda recommended in many "which firewall" threads but does anyone actually use it? Their own forum seems pretty dead and there aren't any good user guides or anything that I can find.

    Fannymites,

I guess it is the NetVeda admin interface.

    I believe that is ipcLAM.exe.
All I can think of is that it is something to do with checking the license.
I re-installed windows a couple of days ago and when I tried to re-install Netveda it gave me an error about the license being expired (even though it's the free version) and I had to download another copy.
I've tried blocking ipcLic.exe from starting and I'm unable to access the net at all after that.

Sadly, NetVeda forum is not responding to any query at all, guess they like Jetico are not interested in the firewall project anymore, when they released it, they were the keenest to respond.

fannymites, I have been using SafetyNet v3.61 (free) for 6 months now and have never needed to seek help from the forum.
It runs quietly alonside quite a lot of other security stuff and - touch wood - with nary a hiccup or failure of any kind.
    cheers,
    jumpshot

When I see forums that seem dead I always wonder whether it means the program is so good nobody needs any help with it, or whether it means nobody is interested in it.
I haven't had any trouble with using Netveda as such, just this hanging at boot up problem with ipcLic.exe.
I have tried disabling all other startup programs and non essential services and it's still the same.
I've also tried emailing Netveda twice to ask what ipcLic.exe does and whether there are any known conflicts with Netveda and anything else but haven't recieved an answer as yet.
I've uninstalled to give R-Firewall a try (brilliant rules creation but the rest is a shambles) but I'll be re-trying Netveda to see if the problem has gone away.

    Fannymites,

Have you considered Filseclab? It is a basic good rule making firewall.

I have indeed tried filseclab and liked it a lot. The thing that put me off was the inability to specify port ranges or multiple ports in the rules, which means adding a new rule for every port an app uses. With a few messengers running this gets a little tedious and the ruleset is HUGE.
I have now had a reply from Netveda support regarding ipcLic.exe and this is what they had to say -
Because ipcLic.exe isn't actually trying to access the net I don't think this is the cause of the problem but I dunno. They also asked me some other questions to try to work out what was causing the hanging so maybe there will be a simple answer somewhere.

Glad to see NetVeda still responding, that means they arent' dead yet, would be a shame if they it went that way.

Filseclab rules do tend to get huge but it has no impact on its performance and the rules are easy to backup and restore.

I eventually discovered the cause of the Netveda problem.
I use an app called startup control panel to control my startup programs and I had noticed a new entry which kept appearing but it didn't have a name or description so kept disabling it.
Just after re-installing Netveda this entry returned so I left it checked and ta da, no more pop-up from Netveda and no more hanging.
When I had previously installed it I had installed some other things around the same time so I didn't associate the startup entry with Netveda.

This is an example of why it's a good idea to monitor software installations using a program like Total Uninstall. That way, you can look at what got installed instead of wondering where some mysterious new program came from.

I have antihook and mjregwatcher. These gave me warnings about the SafetyNet service being added and two other startup entries for SafetyNet but NOT for ipcLic.exe. Also, ipcLic.exe didn't show up in autoruns in any of it's startup entries and didn't show up in the task manager or process explorer. It also didn't show up in SafetyNet's application trust settings and when I manually added it and set it to allow, it kept resetting to ask.
As I said, it showed as a plain "cmd" type icon in startup control panel but didn't have any other info, no name or description or anything.
All I know is that if I disable the entry in startup control centre then SafetyNet prompts me to allow ipcLic.exe on startup and if I re-enable it, then I don't get the pop-up.
