Another newbie question

One quick question. I am new to TI9. Do I have to defrag my drives every time before I do a full back up? How about before incremental back ups? Thanks.

 

THere is no need to defrag before any backups.

 

If you defrag before doing an incremental then TI will create a large .tib file since defrag would probably have moved a lot of the sectors and TI writes moved/changed sectors to the .tib file.
If you need to defrag I suggest you create a TI image before defragging (in case defrag fails leaving a corrupted disk).
After defrag you could create another TI image (if you wanted an image of the defragged disk) then subsequent incrementals would be small.

 

Defragging before a full backup will make the image smaller. Don't defrag again while you are still adding incrementals to that full backup.

Defragging moves a lot of file, and the resulting incremental after a defrag will be about as big as the original full backup.

Really? I haven't heard that before. I assumed that since only in-use sectors get imaged, it didn't matter if they were scattered about or contiguous.

An incremental or differential backup created after a disk is defragmented might be considerably larger than usual. This is because the defragmentation program changes file locations on disk and the backups reflect these changes. Therefore, it is recommended that you re-create a full backup after disk defragmentation, but you should not to perform defrag your drives every time before you do a full backup.
