will not boot

    My C; drive failed. I replaced the drive and restored image to the new drive.
    computer will not boot. Says it is missing <windows root>\system32\hal.dll

    This worked for me. I used MVP Alex Nichol's Option 1
    You can used any Windows XP CD. I don't have one for this computer. When you go into the Recovery Console, it puts you into the old DOS. The old DOS has a help feature which helps you with the proper entry formats which are critical.
