    Hello,
    I have been struggling with "upgrading" from an older 80gb drive to a modern 200gb. I am running Windows XP SP2 on the system at present. I originally atttempted my trusty copy of Symantec Ghost 9.0... It appeared to work until I rebooted from my new disk, windows gets about half way booted up and then reboots. So, I grabbed the trial of Acronis, thinking perhaps that the problem would be "fixed"... Exact same situation with TrueImage.
    Any guesses? Is it possible that my machine just has a problem with booting from these new big drives? It sees and partitions it just fine... Is this a known issue with XP?

    Thanks.

    It's not an XP problem.

    Have you error checked your old drive and the new drive? Be sure to check for bad sectors on both? Use CHKDSK /R.

    Yup, performed a full surface scan on them both, no problems there.
    Is it possible that is is something to do with going from an older addressing scheme drive to the newer 48-bit addressing drives?

    Hello achra,

    Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

    Please do the following:

    - Create Bootable Rescue CD using the latest build of Acronis True Image (937 for version 8.0 or 2277 for version 9.0);

    - Turn off your PC and connect both source and destination hard drives;

    - Boot your PC from Bootable Rescue CD you created earlier and perform the disk cloning process;

    - Turn off the PC right after the disk cloning process has been finished and unplug the old drive;

    - Connect the new drive as master and try to boot;

    - If it does not boot then please boot the computer from Windows XP Installation CD and run "fixmbr" command in Recovery Console.

    - If it still does not boot then please keep the newly cloned non-booting drive connected and create Acronis Report in the way described below:

    - Download Acronis Report Utility and run it on any other "healthy" PC;

    - Select the "Create Bootable Floppy" option;

    - Insert a blank floppy disk in the A: drive and proceed with creation of the bootable floppy;

    - Boot the computer having the issue from this diskette and wait for report creation process to finish;

    - Collect the report file from the floppy.

    Please also collect the following information:

    - Have you received any error messages? What exact messages?

    - When exactly does the boot process stop?

    - Describe actions taken before the problem appears step-by-step.

    Please create an account, then log in and submit a request for technical support. Attach all the collected files and information to your request along with the link to this thread. We will investigate the problem and try to provide you with the solution.

    Thank you.

    The support for disks greater than 137GB was implemented in Windows XP SP1 so it shouldn't be a problem although you should check that your current BIOS version is 48-bit LBA-compatible. If not, then you will get problems, like a corrupted disk!
