    Hello,

I have recently noticed that when I boot up my computer, PG is not in the system tray but it is still running in the background. Anyone know why this is? Its been working fine for around 8 months; could Kaspersky have anything to do with it as I only just installed it?

    thanks,

    S.

Do any of these conditons apply?

Question: Why don't my Notification Area icons show or why do they disappear?

Chevron is missing: For some users, setting the very first icon to Always Hide, restores the arrow/chevron. Note: It does time time for it to become effective.

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear:

This happens for most Auto-Logon users. Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Disable SSDP and uPNP Services (Line 156)

Or if you are running XP SP1 uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows Components.

Hide or Show Inactive Icons in the Notification Area (Line 53)

Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53)
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Once done, Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe, and then click End Process. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task, type explorer, and then click OK.

Volume Control disappears: Save Settings on Exit (Line 54)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

thanks ronjor, but none of these apply. It seems they are work arounds for icons that keep getting hidden when inactive; pg is not visible in the system tray at all when I start up!

This is very strange indeed and I have no idea what to do...

In the past I has similair problems with icons and that was all due to another program, blocking the rest.

For instance with Tiny installed and Onlin Armor coming in. And there are more proggies that give problems like that when used together. With the outcome of all kind of icons not appearing. But most times the programs in question are just working fine.

You should give the links Ronjor posted a try. The missing or disappearing icons issue is a Windows XP issue and is NOT merely for inactive icons. It can affect any of the icons even when set for always show. The missing Icon issue has been discussed in many different programs' forums.

This started to happen to me once I installed another program. I've got a post under the NOD32 board showing a picture. My icons and the apps they belong to are also being shuffled around.

Windows XP does automatically try to re-order the startup procedure, its part of the self optimisation improvements in XP. If you have problems, consider deleting all files in the PREFETCH folder and rebooting a few times so it can re-optimise.

As for disappearing icons I don't think it would be part of the above. Probably best to run PG manually and see if it appears (was already there) or loads and tries to attach to the other components.

You could then disable protection and uninstall (backup DAT files if you like) then reinstall (restore backup DAT files before reboot) and see if the problem is gone.

I should clairify ...my PG appears without any problems even though I'm having this 'taskbar missing icons' issue. It seems that if you have this taskbar issue, its a hit and miss as to what icon(s) won't show up.

My PG is there on boot but disappears while using the computer. It's still running but there is no tray icon. It never used to do this. Just started. I'm not having any problems with any other tray icons. I am having a problem when it does this of tool tips not appearing for the systray items. Tool tips still appear though for the task bar items.

I did uninstall Port Explorer just before it disappeared. Maybe that affected it because I also could not open this forum after uninstalling Port Explorer. I got a weird message about my proxy connection being refused here. I came to the forums here just fine but then couldn't open any of them. I had declined immediate reboot after the uninstallation and I guess that was not a good idea.

Rebooting after the uninstall is required because of the reordering of the Winsock stack, that would have caused your problem for sure.

So procguard.exe is still running when the tray icon disappears? then I find it hard to believe it would be a PG problem per se. Firstly, there's no code anywhere where PG decides to hide the icon. It creates it, changes colours etc, and thats it. And secondly, you say all icons lose their ability to tooltip. That suggests Windows has done something. No sign of an explorer.exe restart at that time? you could check the logs for explorer.exe being restarted, and dwwin.exe running (evidence of it crashing)

We will look at the colours just in case. Next time it happens, can you note the time, or check your logs immediately? See if there was a block at that time it might have been trying to change to red and somehow disappeared (doubtful).. thanks :)

Ahh...reordering the Winsock stack would mess up my connection. I didn't realize it did that or I would not have declined the reboot. :D I just didn't want to reboot right then. I hate having to do that as I have to save 5 or 6 instances of Ping Plotter Pro targets which is not really a hassle, but I don't want any interruption in the pinging of the targets (especially not with this nice new beta that was cooked up for me last night to test).

No, Explorer didn't restart/crash. nVidia Desktop Manager would have tried to stop that and warned me and DrWatson would have popped up on the screen also. Yes, procguard.exe is still running when this happens. First thing I did when I noticed the icon missing was bring up Task Manager from the systray and look to see what was running. Then I tested it by starting an application I haven't used in ages and that PG would alert on, if running, because I had not started that application during the learning period for PG and it did pop up several screens asking me what I wanted to do about letting a process connected to the old application start. I then headed over here to ask about it and couldn't open the forums. I rebooted then and the icon was back and I had tool tips again for the systray icons.

I checked Event Viewer, Dr.Watson, and PG logs. (I'm glad I did as I learned that PG on reboot stopped uphclean from installing a driver/service. I didn't know it needed driver install rights...now I do). This is the log from PG showing Port Explorer uninstall and then shutdown. The icon disappeared after PE uninstall and before shutdown. I think it odd that there is nothing in the log regarding the application I ran after the icon disappeared. PG was running because it popped up when I started the old application that I not run during PG learning mode. So, why is there nothing in the log?

When it disappeared before, I think I had just uninstalled some application that also needed a reboot and I declined (again because of Ping Plotter) temporarily. I did some housecleaning the last few days and uninstalled a number of applications and it was around then that it disappeared the first time.

Maybe it was some Windows thing, but if it was Explorer instability, etc. nVidia Desktop Manager would have (should have) told me.

This is probably a silly idea, but I have hidden icons checked on the properties for the taskbar. I've noticed that very occasionally the setting "always, show" defaults back to "hide when inactive". I just wondered if the icon for Processguard would still be there under past icons and by changing the setting this could bring the icon back?

Just a thought, and probably not a good one,

It wouldn't make any difference for me. I have all the XP stuff like that disabled. I use classic look and and avoid any XPish stuff that I can. So, I always see all icons.

I don't like a lot of the XPish stuff and I use the classic look as well. I have most Icons set to always show or always hide, I like to maximize the tab space for running programs. My thought was that if by chance the icon showed up in the "past icon" section it might be a way to bring it back.

I would ask both parties involved to take a step back, take a deep breath and find a way to co-exist in this thread with their respective problems. IMHO both parties have similar problems in regards to the stated fact that at a point in time the PG icon is not in the systray.

If this request is not granted or agreeable....I'll happily split the thread and each user can work out their missing PG icon separately.

**Please note I have also removed a few posts that simply distract from the problem solving at hand.

I found my systray icons kept disappearing - eventually I discovered that it was because I had turned off 'show desktop icons' on the desktop - when I turned this back on my systray icons reappeared!
