If doesn't end up working, try reinstalling it. It's only a small file :)

    Hi macdon,

Something strange is going on with CWShredder. I visited both the TrendMicro and Intermute websites, and they appear to have reverted their latest version from 2.16 back to 2.15?

On 9/20/2005 when I became aware of version 2.16, I downloaded and installed it, but I retained the 2.15 version in another folder.

I second that. CWShredder is only ONE file, without any installing procedure.
It doesn't even appear in the Add/Remove window.
Delete the CWShredder file and download it again from the link :
    http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html
which is now the official homepage of CWShredder v2.15.

    EDIT :
Always install CWShredder in a separate folder under "Program Files", just like HijackThis Log and any other software.

    Hi The Hammer,

7 new variants is consistent with release note for version 2.16.

So does 2.16 really exist as it's not listed as the most current version on Trend's site or Intermute?

The way I updated to version 2.16 was via the Check for Update button on version 2.15 and updated it online that way.

It really does exist, and I would get it from Softpedia if I needed to get it now. http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/CWShredder-Download-8114.html

As for what's going on with the Trend and Intermute websites, I don't know,
maybe they caught some flack from those who can't use it because they don't have Windows XP/2000.

It's interesting that the 2.15 version can check for updates, but doesn't find any.Whereas the 2.16 version downloaded from Softpedia cannot check for updates. So I decided not to run 2.16 as I have no CWS priblems at present.

    Hi Hammer, et. al.,

Since I subscribe to Trend Micro, I sent email to Intermute to get the story on CWShredder v2.16, and they say "it was never officially released", and to look for ver 2.17 in the coming weeks. No further information is available."

Just yesterday, HijackThis failed to provide a solution to my CWS.Smartsearch problem. So, I sent email to Intermute about the problem and voluteered to run their Dr Diag tool to help solve the issue. They recommended I download/install and update the definitions for the latest Trend Micro Anti-Spyware 3.0 available at http://www.trendmicro.com/en/products/desktop/as/evaluate/overview.htm

While it did solve the problem which CWShredder verified by multiple runs, it is a real CPU hog in the background at 50% CPU utilization. However, it does have some very nice security advisories and runs what it calls Venus Spyware Traps in realtime, and has settings to remove history tracks.

If in the future you do have CWS problems, I heartily recommend you download the 30 day free trial of TMAS 3.0 to solve the problem as I did since it contains the latest CWShredder updates.
