Backup to DVD and external usb drive ?

Just got true image 9!
Ran backup archive and ran "check archieve" ! Ihave external usb hard drive and also would like to put backup
on DVD's but cannot find out how to do either.

I'm not clear on what the two things you want to do are.

After you create an image on the USB drive, you can burn it to DVDs using any burning software such as Nero, Roxio, etc. Of course, if the backup image is larger than 4.3GB, you will need to use the ITI feature to split the image into pieces that fit on a DVD disk.

If you want to create the image on the USB drive, you simply select that as the target for the image. If you see an My Computer with a + sign, click on the + sign to reveal all the drives on your computer.

My problem is of course" I'm confused " on how to create a complete system backup image on my USB external hard drive. Apparently , I don't know how to get the complete system archives transferred to the USB external drive or how make the backup directly to the external drive. It seems that the archives system backup was made on my C:/drive and I wanted it on the L:/drive which is my USB external drive. My CD(DVD) recorder is a Sonic" Record Now" not sure if it's capable of splittingup the 17.5 GB backup.

Hi Rosina,

OK, now that makes things a lot clearer.

First, you know how to make a backup image and to check it because you did that successfully by creating the image on your C drive. The two points to address are:
1. Selecting a different drive as the target for the image when creating a backup, and
2. Splitting the image so that it can be burned to DVD disks later using the Sonic software. It's necessary to use the TI feature for splitting the image because once it it larger than 4.3GB, it won't fit on DVD disks.

In preparation for making a new image, you should either move the first image you made to the USB drive or delete it. Otherwise, it will be part of the second image since it is on the C drive. Windows Explorer is the tool for this (Start / All Programs / Accessories / Windows Explorer). You can also use Windows Explorer to create folders on your USB drive to hold backup images if you will be using the drive for various tasks.

Now, for the first point, connect your USB drive and be sure it is powered on. Then start TI and proceed with creating a full image backup as you did the first time selecting your C drive as the source to be backed up.

After you have selected the source, you will see a screen where you can select the destination drive where the image will be created. This is where you need to select your USB drive, L. If there is a + next to My Computer, click that to reveal all the drives. Then click on the L drive as the target. If you created a folder on the USB drive, click the + next to L and select the folder. Supply a name for the backup or add something to the "MyBackup" suggested to make it unique. For example, 9-27-05-MyBackup.

Addresing the second point, on a following screen, you will be able to split the backup file. I suggest that you use the suggested size for DVDs from the drop down list.

Now the image will be created on the USB drive in pieces small enough for you to burn to DVDs using your Sonic software. The pieces will all have the same name followed by 1, 2, 3, etc. to show they are parts of one image, for example 9-27-05-MyBackup1.tib, 9-27-05MyBackup2.tib.

After you have created the new image, use the CheckImage feature to verify that it is good. You can select just the first part of the image, and all the pieces will be verified because it is all one image.
