Hello everyone! I really love this forum and I think it's absolutely great! There's nothing comparable concerning security so far. The administrators are doing a good job and if I look at the growing community I think this explains everything. But... yes there's a "but" unfortunately... something I don't get somehow. If I look at the members (only registered users can do that -Members list) I see, that most of the registered users haven't written a single post Can someone explain this to me? Do they register and then goodbye? Someone could say the administrators are registering themselves over and over to get a bigger community. lol But no, I don't believe that! These guys are far too serious than having time for such bulls--t. I would go through fire and water for them concerning this! Nevertheless I still don't understand why it is like that? Someone has an explanation for this? Relieve me from my ignorance please!! Best regards! Patrice
I think there are lots of people who are "lurkers" but want to be registered all the same; they want to show that they are here but they either feel they don't have anything to add by posting or are a little "shy"; which is understandable. I've got little of serious value to add most of the time but I still come out and throw in my questions and add what I do know when I can. I think there are plenty of people who read this forum and learn a lot; appreciate the forum and want to be a part of it even though they haven't yet decided to post.
Every board I've ever seen has been like that. Lots of lurkers just looking for information and afraid of goofing up if they start posting. I was like that a long time myself. If one could gather the statistics, I would bet that on the average, less than 30% of registered members ever post or post only one or two times. I'm a member on some boards I've never posted on or posted a few times and left for various reasons. For a while, I tried to draw the lurkers out on one board. Didn't work.

Alot of guys/gals who register and never post are indeed lurkers, I was for many months, they may be registering so new threads and posts are easily visible, thats what I used to do anyway Eventually when you get a grasp of the regulars and how they work then they may feel its time to post

Pretty much agree with the people who posted above me Ive been reading threads here on a consistent basis since sept of last year and from that time till now, I feel I have gained a wealth of information. The subject matter and the knowledgable members that are already established here, indeed make it harder for someone new to want to add something though. And some people may not take security as much of an interest but as more of a concern. So they may come and go when situations and events dictate them to. Another reason maybe that very knowledgable people may not want to "expose" how much they truly know. If one of knowledge is to be underminded or shows weakness in their aguement, others may see it as far more embarassing (it would be like Ralph Wiggum outsmarting Professor Frink!) This however I wish were not the case, as most valuable information usually comes from failure. You tend to remember them better too Kinda off topic, (if what I said wasnt already)... In Security I think its basis is to share information to further protect yourself and others from being exploited. And I think the community on this board strongly represent that. However like I mentioned above, it is not always true. I also think there is a side (in the security community in general) that maybe a little less open. In general they will not "take your hand and walk you through" things like you may find in other fields. Many times the focus is on theory and solutions rather than on explanation or how-to (which I think are also beneficial). I guess it is assumed one already knows this information. You might find examples of this in books like the "Maximum Security" series, which I enjoyed reading more than the Hacking Exposed series. Dont know why
Hi all, "Zero-posters" are a known factor on every board. Most of them will be lurking the way Tinribs described (having the advantage of the indicators telling them what has been read). Others will register in order to ask a question and find the answer somewhere before posting. On the other hand we have lots of regular posters who never registered. All should know they are welcome to use this board as they see fit (within the limits set by our TOS ). And I sure hope nobody will ever refrain from posting because they are afraid it might make them look stupid (I know I don't ) Regards, Pieter

But I don't consider her as a lurker at all, she has already written 72 post!! That's great! Hope there will be some more answers! As i recall around Sept 2001 this new Wilders Forum to which you are now posting in YABB had a previous forum and even one before that I do not think it was a requirement to then re-register at this YABB Board..and it could be some are older members. But I am not sure about that What the rest have posted is certainly true. Some only post when they need help..and after that they just read.
I fall under a whole new catagory..I don't have the time to lurk..I may have a few posts in this forum..which I must add is a great forum. I first came here and posted because someone from the TDS forum told me to post my non tds questions here. I don't have many non tds questions regarding security..I registered because it was the thing to do,more doors open. I really like this forum , and there is a wealth of info here ..I mean wow..is there ever. I wish i had the time.Not knowing sh... does have some effect on posting. Also dofferent peeps do different things when online. I like to find new stuff ... so most of my online time is spent searching for new info/experience. Cheers
I probably should be a lurker - but I've found there's a crying need on every board for someone who's not afraid to stroll up to the podium and ask questions so dumb that experienced computer users are left rolling on the floor with laughter. That's okay - because then they get busy and answer the questions that other people were afraid to ask in a way that can be understood by anyone. Exposing my ignorance about various things has never been a problem - staying ignorant by not asking questions would be really sad, though. God bless the lurkers, we're here for them, too. Pete
I'm relatively new on this great forum. And maybe I'm a bit of a lurker, but I sure am a great reader of all the posts concerning security. It helps me understand what i consider a highly complicated matter: everything in and on my computer .
Been lurking around this BB awhile....first came here when there were less than 300 members....in respect for the administrors became a registered member for a while. Due to my business the use of cookies presents me with some extra difficulties not experienced by the norm user/member so find myself forced to permanently "guest" Consider myself "a forever newbes" with tons of questions.....don't know much about computers....an have to desire to be a wiz.....so I just mosey on by as best I can hopeing for the best expecting the worse....with restore disc always at the ready..... Nahhhh......snowman knows nothing! LOL!!!! Okay, here's my excuse and it's the honest truth. I have been here a long time, but have thought for a couple of months now that the board was DOWN and only the archives were open. I would check my bookmarked URL and always came up to the same page that indicated (I THOUGHT) that the new board wasn't ready. So, for me, I was a regular poster for a long time, but didn't realize there was anyplace to READ OR POST. Still have to laugh at Pete and Snowman for their humble humility - they're both sharp as tacks and know so much of this upside down - don't let 'em fool 'ya! I registered a couple of months ago and to be perfectly honest I am here to learn. I am pretty much a novice and anything I have learned I have done by myself.So my knowledge is very limited.I will be asking alot of questions and I hope that will be ok. If not just let me know and I will go back on lurk mode I am like a sponge when it comes to learning about computer things!!

People like you who come out and ask a question are what starts threads that wind up having all kinds of great stuff to learn in them for not only novices but even the gurus here and there! I'm a novice myself but I've seen it happen in this forum... So get those questions out there and the truth shall set you free! or.. something like that
