Just asking, if you’ve got some answer… maybe it’ll evokes some kind of favoritism but it’s up to you. ;) :-*

I have quality software from many countries. I can't even name them all.
I would say that the majority of programs I have are made in the United States.

    Hi sweater,

I don't think "best software" is confined to be produced by any one country these days, otherwise, everyone would just go there to get their software - nez pas?

I'm not entirely certain what is meant by "best" software. It could mean almost anything within certain contexts. For instance, does it mean lock-tight secured oprational code invulnerable to any threat? Does it mean ease-of-use for any level user from novice-expert? Does it mean easy to install and uninstall? Does it mean ease of extensibility - think Java? Does it mean - software with no known bugs? And just because no bugs are known does not mean none exist!

Would we even recognize it if we experienced it, or would it fly under our radar?

    Just my $0.02 worth!

Australia! Online Armor, DCS, Spyware Doctor, etc etc. Even my father (a programmer, not at all involved in security stuff) had noted that there's a lot of good stuff coming out of AU :)

maybe Russia? there's alot of cyber-crimial activity there. that's just the part of programming i come across the most. it could be because of the country's high population, the climate (not weather :D) perhaps their language helps, which might be better suited to the thought processes of programming, as in the sciences; Physics - German speakers, Chemistry - English

sorry, i didn't read the question very carefully  i have 100s of programs, but have no idea where they come from. the program i can't wait to install when i get home is from Sweden. that's just one program though. Linus from Finland is good, maybe there, i have no idea, i really don't know where my programs are from :( and, i suppose some are produced by people from more than one country. sorry for the rambling. but, i think the best programmers are from Russia (not always with love :-*) and believe the main reason why is their spoken language.

France: For best interfaces, and work flow efficiency

Germany: Many technically efficient programs. One's like Nero stand out for interface, support and usability.

    Australia: some strong security apps.

India, Russia: Known for programming excellence

U.S.A. - Still dominates the high end graphics, video, desktop publishing, and O/S...but I would bet the farm that at least one of these will be lost in the not too distant future.

But the best hardware is made in countries like Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc.

Is it really? Do they make new pentium chips overseas? Video Processing Units? I'm not sure what they make overseas, but I know that we still have memory modules made here...but i think the actual little square memory wafers come from asia.

Could you make a PC with nothing manufactured in the USA?

That could be a bad thing. If it is sexy enough than I wouldn't care how well it worked.

Historically speaking, it is hands down the United States. If you look at companies like Digital, Digital Reasearch, MicroPro, Apple, Microsoft, ComputerVision, Adobe, AutoDesk, IBM, Wang, Lotus, Novell, infinitum, the history and track record speaks for itself.

With the Internet, things are changing a bit. I now use utilities from Germany, Australia. I have a graphics card made in Canada (which is giving me fits right now). And I have games from Croatia, France, and Canada. But the vast majority is still American, especially the productivity software.

I live in Bangalore, India and work for one of the world's largest software companies. Though I am myself not a software developer, I do know that India is writing the codes for tonnes of softwares (Consumer & Enterprise software both) for companies across the world. :D

Uhhh...ok..what're trying to get at? I was simply stating that the GUI was attractive since someone had mentioned that software from Germany wasn't the best looking..and used TuneUp Utilities as an example. And if you have tried TuneUp Utilities, you would know that it works great.

Well, I guess I myself would rank the US as no 1, see Windows XP is made by Micro$oft in the US, and most of the software that I use, security, etc..... are all made mainly in the US. But Australia too, credits to DiamondCS for Processguard, a fantastic piece of security software! BTW I see Australia is one fine maker of top-notch security software(diamondCS) Observe closely and see the major computer manufacturers like Dell, HP I think more than 90% of all the computers they make come with Microsoft Windows a product that is made in the US.
Germany, nah I dont see any good software coming out from there.
But anyone, anywhere, can create good computer software anywhere in the world.

Look, the post seemed to be asking for impressions. Do you feel there is no difference from software that is being made in different parts of the globe? If you do, then lets hear about it.

I can only guess that there is some saracasm, but I guess I'll never know. Some people say what they mean, others don't. I will say one thing that was on my mind at the moment I ventured to offer my opinions. I am currently Beta testing a word processing program from Germany's software giant, SoftMaker*. This program is compatiable with MS Word to the point that it can open files that are protected with Word's built-in encryption (providing you know the password). I am no expert in software, but IMHO this software is so much better than MS Word that it is rediculous. So much better, in fact, that after a few days I uninstalled MS Word.

As for my other observations, from the programs I own, I have had by far the best experiences with european made software. A big hobby of mine is computer graphics. I have hundreds of graphics programs and over 20,000 plugins (not all in use :)) for photoshop. Adobe + Microsoft are the standard. But is this legitimate superiority and free market in action? People claim you have a choice of software...I won't even go there. I will say that there is a collection of all of Adobes major fonts called font folio 9 (or something like that) this collection of fonts sells for $10,000. I have very nearly the same collection purchased for $9.99. Do you even begin to see where I was/am coming from? If so, don't bother responding.

*Beta testing in the sense that they have made available to the public a pre-release version of TextMaker 2005.
