There must be a lot of cleanup before rebuilding to begin. New Orleans is a toxic dump right now. It might be several years before people could move back in there and be relatively sure that they will not become ill from all the toxic chemicals, gasoline, raw sewage, putrifying human bodies and dead animals.

The environmental impact is enormous!!!

 

The last I heard they would probably have to bulldoze 70% of the houses in New Orleans. Have you thought where the lumber is going to come from to replace them. There is a lumber shortage now, and they are looking at replacing tens of thousands of houses in New Orleans alone. This unfortunate situation will probably take closer to five years if they rebuild even 35% of the destroyed structures. I really feel it in my heart for all of the people in the gulf coast that were affected by this storm. God bless them all.

Sean Penn's rescue bid sinks

EFFORTS by Hollywood actor Sean Penn to aid New Orleans victims stranded by Hurricane Katrina foundered badly overnight, when the boat he was piloting to launch a rescue attempt sprang a leak.

Penn had planned to rescue children waylaid by Katrina's flood waters, but apparently forgot to plug a hole in the bottom of the vessel, which began taking water within seconds of its launch.
The actor, known for his political activism, was seen wearing what appeared to be a white flak jacket and frantically bailing water out of the sinking vessel with a red plastic cup.

When the boat's motor failed to start, those aboard were forced to use paddles to propel themselves down the flooded New Orleans street.

Asked what he had hoped to achieve in the waterlogged city, the actor replied: "Whatever I can do to help."

With the boat loaded with members of Penn's entourage, including a personal photographer, one bystander taunted the actor: "How are you going to get any people in that thing?"

 

Couldn't think of any other way to explain when it comes to helping in that situation(softwood lumber supply)...

NORMALLY, ONE wouldn't expect a small environmental magazine in Canada to discover a shocking reality of the New Orleans hurricane disaster that seems to have escaped notice.

It seems that a toxic landfill site on which housing was built in central New Orleans is now under floodwaters with the potential to pollute and contaminate portions of the Gulf Coast.

CNN and Fox News have now been alerted.

Something called the Agriculture Street Landfill (ASL) is located on a 95-acre site in central New Orleans.

Bangladesh, one of the poorest and most flood prone countries in the world is sending a million dollars in aid for the devastated areas.

Help is truly coming from everywhere.

In Myrtle Beach we have a command center going and have 40 familes coming here that will get good medical attention and housing..also this is the home of Hooters Air and they are bringing in even more families in..that's the kind of things this thread should be talking about..and stuff like this..

I don't know what the thread should be talking about but I do know that the USA as a whole will be talking about solutions and that discussion will be a big one and can not be stopped.

They are already talking about the dam situation in California which is a even greater potential catastrophe.

Cleanup is all well and good but how do we do better in the future?

Well, I have to stop thinking about this stuff any way....soon I'll be on a ship with only eat, sleep and work to think about. Everyone take care!!
