After I made an image using TI, I defraged my hard drive using Perfect disk which moves data around considerably. Should I delete the first image and make a new image since data may have been moved to another cluster on the hard drive?

No you don't need another image just because you have defragged. All your files are stored in the backup you made before defragging and they can be individually restored or you can restore the partition/disk in total.

OK. I know I can restore the image.

My question is since the sectors are imaged will they be restored as they were before the defrag, in less than optimal locations on the fragmented sectors from which they were originally copied..

It depends on whether you are talking about recovering individual files or a complete partition/disk? I think that a restore of a partition or disk will have the same layout as it had when it was backed up. If the disk was optimal before backup then it will still be optimal after restore. An individual file restore, however, may place the restored file anywhere in the target partition.

The sectors will be restored the way they were before the image.
But I think it would be a waste of time to recreate the image after the defrag.
Hopefully an image never has to be used. But if you have to restore an image some time down the road, after that you probably would have to restore changes that were made after the perfect image was created. So your fragmentation will not be so perfect anymore.
The only advantage I see in making an image after a defrag is that the image file may be slightly smaller.

    Linux TI8 - Need a Defrag after restore ?

Hi. This is my first post. Excuse my english. That's why I use another guy's thread ;)

TI8 for Linux - backup'd ext3 hda1 partition via trueimagecmd without problems at all. It always tooks about 3-4 minutes for 2.5 gb files (in a 16gb hda partititon), image to another fs (850kb image).
Less than 4 mins!! WOW!
Note: always full image (with timestamped name). No incremental!

Well. Two days ago I had to restore such image to the same partition space (I guess it has been deleted, before restoring...)
Everything worked fine, since then; everything BUT the fsck and trueimagecmd commands.

Infact they both became very very slow, and to backup the same image to the same directory now it tooks more than 20 minutes. 500% times slower!

As I haven't changed anything than before the restore, I guess it's due to a fragmentation of such restored filesystem.

Could anybody suggest a solution or help me anyway ?

    Thank you very very much.
