Used to use NAV. Once they started activations, I dropped them. Since they had a heck of a lot of problems w/ their activation scheme in the first year, I figure my caution was borne out. Switched to McAfee. Didn't really like their ActiveX stuff, so I looked at NOD32. Basically I wanted small footprint and small system impact, but good protection. Finally switched this year to NOD32.

I hope you don't have both of them running at the same time. :D

Me, Went from NAV -> McAfee -> Panda -> BitDefender -> NOD32. NOD32 seems to be a winner for me. :D

I'm using McAfee VS 10 at this time. I've tried a lot of them, NAV, KAV, NOD32, Panda, Trend Micro, etc. McAfee performs the best on my computer. Daily updates except for Saturday and Sunday, But that's ok, because I figure if some nasty breaks out during that time, there will be an update.

I started out with Norton, switched to McAfee for a couple of years. It came with my laptop, and when the free trial expired, I decided to go with Trend because of an article I read in PC World which recommended it. Later I found out that the computer store sold me Trend Micro Internet Security 2004 when it was 2005 that had been recommended. I didn't realize this mistake until I purchased Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 for my desktop. I didn't download the programs from the Net because of my slow dial-up connection.

I really like the Trend. I get a few false positives in my e-mail, but it converts the message to a text file so I can read it anyway. The Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 also has a firewall and is set up for wireless (wish I had it on my laptop!) protection. I like the integrated features. I have had a few quirks with it, but I've managed to work them out by uninstalling and re-installing the program (I have had two harddrive failures in the past 6 months... another reason I prefer to have the CDs but that's a whole 'nother story). Before my last re-format of Windows, I downloaded several other AV and tried them out, and they didn't find any viruses, trojans, worms, or malware on my computer, so I was satisfied that Trend was doing the job.

Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 also checks that I have the latest security updates from Microsoft. It will check for adware, too. I also run Ad-aware. The only thing either finds are cookies.

Trend updates daily, sometimes more than once a day. It also notifies me of outbreaks and if something is trying to attack a port on my computer.

When my subscription runs out next year, I may consider another AV. Does NOD 32 come on CD? This forum does seem to be a big fan of that program. Is there a reason for this? I never heard of it before I came to Wilder's. You can follow the details of my journey on my blog.

    EX norton user:

now on NOD32 and started using KAV personal pro. latest version (wich by the way has impressed me, the only bad thing is that at max scanning options it took like 4 hours to perform the scan when nod did it on 1 hr 14 mins, but certainly kav found more stuff).

Nod 32 is the only one I've used, I like Kav, but it does not work on 2003, unless I get the version that work on Win Server 2003 but I will stick to NOD 32!! *puppy*

For me its VBA32. Nice and light, very good detections, but can get a few false positives on heuristics if you crank it up high. The support is very quick and sorts the false + out for you.
I have tried many and rather like this one. So far impressed

Bitdefender 9 - excellent program. No problems with Outpost either, another great program if you are looking for a firewall!

on my never ending quest to explore the path of the free i'm using AVG (free) the on demand scanner actually found something which was kinda cute.

before installing software on my machine i consider 4 things

how much is it gonna cost in terms of initial payment and regular yearly subsciptions? - AVG free scores a maximum of 10 here.

how effective is it? - this is difficult to assess - i guess the only way to measure it is over a long period of time to see if your system remains clean.

how user friendly is it? how much control do you have if you need it?

how stable is it? - the last thing i want is to install protection software only to find it's more trouble than the naughties it's trying to guard against. i've read quite a few threads where protection software like AV and Firewall has crashed the installer's machine (and they have paid money to let it do it) - this is one of the reasons i am reluctant to pay for software. too much of it is unreliable. you can have a stable verson running ok and then before you know it you install the new soopa doopa version only to see your machine lying in tatters before you.

I've been a long long time user of NAV. Just dumped it because I started to get some problems with it and all the systemworks suite, computer was crashing more and more often and NAV definitions updates failed to run quite often, the program asked me to run the previous definition instead. After reading a lot, I'm now on an evaluation version of NOD32 and geezz I'm very impressed so far. Will buy it for sure. :D

 After hearing everyone here say AVAST, I am now using AVAST. Delete one from AVG and add one to AVAST.

    Thanks

I just uninstalled Norton 2004 (files, startups, services, registry keys) and installed NOD32. My PC now boots, runs and shuts down about 3 times faster and on a full scan it found a virus NAV missed. I'm sold! :)
