filseclab vs. Netvada vs. Jetico: your take?

XP SP2, NAT firewall router.

Which of these free firewalls are you guys enamored with? I am too new to this to be able to tell, really. I have used filseclab and jetico and I like both. I have not leak tested them though. A firewall is supposed to do a job primarily. I would love to know what you experienced users think about the job that these do.

Do you think that they are as good as Kerio 4.2 or zone alarm free. I am looking mostly for good application and outbound alerts and control because I have a firewall router. But all impressions and takes are most appreciated.

Since you have a router, inbound is already handled as you say. I would think that Jetico might possibly do the best job on outbound, but it might also be rather annoying with it's popups as well, as many have testified to in past threads. However Jetico may pass more leaktests. Let's see what others say..

 

i have used all three and there all good.but with jetico i find like Kerodo.already said the popup.are too much and its hard to config it.netveda i havnt used that much.but filseclab wich i have on now i think is the easest to set up and use.imo

I now use netveda which is very easy to configure, my other pc has ZA 6

I havent tried filescab yet but plan to soon.

 

Netveda, easy to use, great protection

 

Jetico maybe a pain as far as configuration is concerned, but filesclab disables incoming connections by default and Netvada is akward to setup.

Jetico popup's often, but once you've answered it's questions it normally leaves you in peace.

Kerio would be a suitable alternative to all of these, although Jetico uses the lowest amount of system resources.

 

I agree with what's been said. Tried Netveda (decent especially if doing ICS), Jetico (great, but many popups and will eventually require payment), Filseclab (haven't tried):

Kerio 4.2 - free version is very good - and offers rules based if you want it

 

I use jetico, and love it.
Ive worked out a very easy way to configure it. When you set up all you need to do is make 3 extra tables called,

app access only- allow access to network, block rest

app part trusted- allow access to network, ask everything else (i use this for spybot, adaware etc) the only pop ups you get are update addresses, allow them if it looks ok.

app full out- allow everything, i use this for nod32

you will only get popups for the first time you use a program.
then just put a bullet in "handle as"
decide which of the above categorys to put it in.

EASY!!!!!

Jetico is not that easy to setup, even if you understand the rules that your putting in, and I found when using bit torrent etc, I had to add addition rules at packet level before it would even work.

My main grip with Jetico is that fact that the moment you change an application you have to update the rules to it, since it records the MD5 details along side each rule. I know you can get around this to some degree by setting up tables, but I feel the MD5 details should have been held in a special table.

 

The MD5/checksum problem in Jetico is really silly. It should be updated the same way every other firewall does it, instead of having to create a new rule each time. I mentioned it to them, as did several other people, but they just never changed it. It's ridiculous...

 

IMO Jetico is just the most ridiculous firewall I've tried. There isn't one advantage Jetico has over other firewalls that makes it worth the aggravation.

 

Don't know if I would go quite that far, but I have never managed to get it to work. You might expect to work straight out of the box and then adjust it as necessary but that does not seem to be the case.

If they are going to make it so complex they will not make it to market.

That's not new, been the latest stable release for a while now. At least that's the version number of mine according to the help file.

 

I thought it was, but do not currently have it installed so was not certain.

your right, with the filesharing programs, you do need additional rules.
But with most programs the tables do work pretty good.
I had a lot of problems at first with set up. but i tried this way and it made it a whole lot easier.

Do be honest I have no idea, I did search around a little without much joy.

 

But does this ask everytime? If your using P2P applications, you'd only want it to ask once, otherwise you'd be there for a lifetime accepting all the incoming connections.

 

It would ask only once and let you set a rule for that particular P2P app, any other new app needing incoming access would need permission.

 

I am using Kerio 2.1.5 as somebody recommended it on this forum and it workin very nice!!

Also Sygate Personal Firewall is not bad.

 

All these firewalls that the original thread starter asked are marginal in popularity.

I really recommend trying Sygate 5.5.2710 or ZA for free easy firewalls.

Sygate's latest I cannot recommend since many users seem to have some problems with it, but the above version you can find download links from the

Maybe Kerio for someone who will have time to learn a rule based firewall.

I am not saying those mentioned in the starting thread are bad, I have no experience with those.

 

Interesting survey results... I wonder what the "Other" category represents, since it got 10% of the votes. ZA is obviously the most popular with 27%.
