    BitDefender 9 Standard coming soon!
    Solution ID: 228 Created on 15 Aug 2005 04:01
Language: English Modified on 15 Aug 2005 04:01
    Software Applications: BitDefender Standard Edition
Operating Systems: Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows 98, Windows Me, Windows NT, Windows XP

    ISSUE:
The new generation of BitDefender products for Windows workstations will be available starting with August 16 (English and French). Versions in other languages will be available from September on their respective websites.

    SOLUTION:
Main new features in BitDefender 9 Standard

    Heuristics in Virtual Environment
Heuristics in Virtual Environment (HiVE) emulates a virtual computer-inside-a-computer where pieces of software are run in order to check for potential malware behavior. This BitDefender proprietary technology represents a new security layer that keeps the operating system safe from unknown viruses by detecting malicious pieces of code for which signatures have not been released yet.

    Outgoing email scanning
BitDefender runs on the POP3/SMTP protocol level, filtering incoming and outgoing e-mail messages, regardless of the e-mail client used without any additional configuration.

    Event logger
Infected and suspect objects, firewall alerts and update events are logged to provide support for informed decisions about the security of your system.

    Hourly updates
Your copy of BitDefender will be updated 24 times a day over the Internet, directly or through a Proxy Server. The product is able to repair itself if necessary, by downloading the damaged or missing files from BitDefender servers. BitDefender license owners benefit from free virus definition updates and free product upgrades.

    Other features
New on-line registration mechanism; on-line registration will give you access to technical support and other BitDefender services.
Option to turn off the computer after the scan process is completed (in Virus Scan and Scheduler)
Possibility to set different actions for infected and suspect files (In Virus Shield, Virus Scan and Scheduler)

Hm,i must say it looks ok. Not much different than 8 regarding interface.
Although i liked skin from version 8 more.
Also their update servers don't work yet it appears (Update error).
    I hope they'll fix it soon :)

    EDIT:

    Re: BitDefender v9

I just upgraded to Bitdefender 9 std from 8 and the updates are working for me. I have been very happy with Bitdefender which I found out about here at Wilders. Have tried a few of the other better known products and decided on Nod32 and Bitdefender. So far, so good. Considered Kaspersky but had a few problems with it. For what its worth Softwin has terrific online support. :)

I too just upgraded to BitDefender 9 Pro Plus, after uninstalling my previous version 8 Pro Plus, and doing a thorough Registry wash of any Softwin or BitDefender references.

I had a trouble-free installation and update, choosing to update after I had registered the product instead of during installation. However, like the previous poster, I too have experienced the same results as above in the Windows Security Center.

    **** NOTE ****
My display of the Windows Security Center's results are not quite as the results shown in the screen shots.

Since I was able to update successfully, my Security Center shows
a firewall and antivirus both installed, working, and up-to-date.

However, Windows Security Center reports that the name of them both is "%1".

Looks like the BitDefender setup is failing to plug in a product name to the WMI module.

    Re: BitDefender v9

I just downloaded and installed BD9. After doing so it tells me that my license has expired, and I need to buy another.
In fact my license does not expire until 1/14/06.

I have sent an email to the support and hope I get something soon. I wish I had waited a few days to update.

Mine did the same thing, but I simply clicked the registration button, put in my v.8 serial number and all was well.

It did not work for me. I got instructions from technical support, but it did not work. I guess I am not unprotected.

    Re: BitDefender v9

I tried on Windows XP SP1 in VirtualPC and same result. Can't update it and it even stated that it has expired after restart. So i trashed this crap.
I wonder what were Softwin guys thinking when they released this buggy thing.
Features sure are promising, but program itslef is buggy.

    Re: BitDefender v9

I finally got it to work. I think the problem was that I had BD 8 on my old computer. When I got a new computer I got a new lic key. I was using that last key, but when I went back to the original key, it worked with the new 9.0.

All seems to be working well now.

Is there an option to not scan already scanned files (or similar, such as on read/write + date)?

I was wondering that myself! I couldn't find one, but maybe it does it by default?

Well, after using it for a while I really didn't see any major improvements over previous versions. I was hoping more from Softwin. :doubt:

When I ran BD 8 Standard, I noticed a slight slowdown in every day connection speeds. Just wondering if anyone has noticed any speed differences between the new BD 9 Standard and BD 8 Standard. Faster, slower, same?

With BD 9 Standard I'm achieving a 25% increase in DSL internet access speed over my former AV (McAfee VS 10), from 2100 kbps to about 2600 kbps.

Then again, it might have something to do with those 3 Verizon trucks parked across the street near the telephone-line access tunnel :D

    Regards,
    Jim
