I bought the Acronis TI 8.0 to back up my Dell laptop C400 with Windows XP Professional-SP2, Intel Pentium 3, 788 MHz, 256 MB of RAM, and a 30 GB hard drive of which I have used 23.3 GB. I also purchased a Lacie 200GB external hard drive to store my back-ups.

When I received the software, I immediately backed up the laptop to the external drive. It took quite a while to complete. The other day I lost a lot of data (ok I accidentally erased a file) and would like to use some of the data I backed up to replace it. When I try to use the Restore Image command, I cannot find the Lacie external hard drive in the list, which is connected to my computer via USB.

I am embarrassed that I am so lost and would greatly appreciate any help.

Please keep in mind that I am not a computer techie so plain language would be appreciated.

You may not need to do a full restore to recover your data.
Try the "Explore Image" option and if you see your USB drive, (Lacie USB drives are fine for me), you can possibly transfer your data from the USB - it's a bit like looking in "Windows Explorer".

Thanks for trying to help rjbsec. I can't even see the external hard drive as an option. It's hidden. I have turned it off and turned it on again. My computer says new hardware found. But can't see it as a choice.

An installation disk for the USB drive - perhaps your PC needs to have it installed. In truth it shouldn't, Windows should see it and install it fine - unless you are saying that it's only in TI that it's not seen.
If you see it in Windows but not in TI then an installation disk won't help.

The drivers are installed -so that isn't it. Any other ideas? Does the software hide the drive? Is there something I am doing wrong?

Windows XP has the drivers for external USB drives built in, so you don't need to install any drivers to see the USB drive.

If after you connect it, you cannot see the drive in Windows Explorer, then there is something wrong with the external drive. Double check the USB cable and power connections. Try a different USB port.

After that, the first thing that I'd do is connect the LaCie drive to another computer running Windows XP, 2000 or Millenium Edition (not Windows 98 or 98SE). If you can't see the contents of the drive, it's not working correctly and that's the problem. If it doesn't even have a drive letter assigned, there's not much you can do within Windows to save the data on it.

You might be able to fix the problem with special software for drive partitioning or error fixing, but I can't offer any strong suggestions.

    Try this:

Plug the Drive into your usb device, and let windows identify it.

goto Control Panel > Add Hardware

Click next then let it search for hardware devices.

When it asks "is the hardward already connected to your computer"
select "yes, I have already connected the hardware"
    and click next.

From the list of Installed Hardware devices, scroll through it and see if you find your device that your trying to get windows to identify.
Once you find it, click next and it should be all fixed and your should see a icon in My Computer to access the drive.

    Hello DenisLeClair,

Thank you for choosing Acronis Disk Backup Software.

rjbsec is correct, when saying that it's more suitable to use Explore Image tool in order to restore some individual files rather then restoring the whole image of your hard drive(s) or partition(s).

However, I'm afraid that after all the posts made in this thread situation is still unclear to me, so could you please inform me about the following details?

    - Tell me if you are able to see your USB hard drive when using Windows Explorer;

I mean does Windows itself recognizes your external USB hard drive?

    - Tell me how did you save your image to the external hard drive.

Was Acronis True Image 8.0 able to recognize the USB hard drive at the time you was creating an image?

    Thank you.
