Has anyone had problems installing the latest version of ewido? I was at a friend of mines house last night and told him about ewido. I d/l'd it and installed it on his computer but on reboot there was an error and the tray icon had a red X on it. It said that the guard was not active. However when you brought up ewido itself it did show as active. The error that was in a pop up box at boot follows...

    error
    isactiveguard:regopenkeyex failed 5 0

There was something else in ewido that made it sound as if his trial time had expired but he had never put the program on his system before. But we then went ahead and registered the program hoping/thinking that maybe it would get rid of the error. But on reboot the error still comes up. I tried to uninstall the program, rebooted and install it again but the error is still there. Anyone know whats going on or possibly have an idea that might fix this? We emailed ewido but as of yet I don't believe my friend has heard back from them.

    Thank in advance

What OS are you on? It must be 2000 or XP.

Did you have any security prog on at the time of install? If so, you should disconnect from the internet, switch off your AV, FW and any other such prog, then uninstall ewido, reboot and try and install again.

It may also be worth downloading a fresh copy of ewido to install, in case you had a corrupt copy. Probably it is best not to use a D/L manager for this. You should also install from a full administrator rights account.

Do make sure you clean out all your temp internet and temp windows files before you install.

See if any of that helps.

Yes he is using WinXP sp1. I had put NOD32 on his system plus ADAware and Spybot S&D. He already had a program called spyware stormer on his system that I am not familiar with. But I changed it to on demand as he was going to use ewido for on access scanning. I will try what you suggest and we will see how it goes.

Spyware Stormer is a ROGUE scanner, scroll down this page for details:- http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

It is important that you get rid of SpywareStormer a.s.a.p. If necessary you could try cleaning your Registry with RegSeeker from here:- http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm

You could even try installing ewido in 'safe' mode if all else fails.

One thing you could certainly do is an online scan from ewido here:- http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/run/
That would clear the rubbish out of your system before attempting to install the full prog.

BTW - SP2 is much safer than SP1 and your friend really should consider upgrading to that.

Thanks for your replies. I have been trying for awhile now to get my friend up to speed on his PC's security. He uses it for a home business and I keep telling him it is important that he does all he can to protect his system and information not to mention his customers. So slowly he is coming around. He had NAV until recently and I got him to switch to NOD32. It found a trojan that NAV had let through and I got that cleaned up. Then ADAware and Spybot S&D found a number of things that I cleaned up for him. His wife was using his system awhile back and saw a popup for Spyware Stormer and bought it and installed it straight away without asking anyone. I had attempted to install SP2 on his system awhile back but on reboot all that came up was his desktop without any icons. I could not get it to work so we had to do a system restore to get it back to where he was before. I had scanned and cleaned with NAV, ADAware and Spybot before attempting to install SP2 but it still failed. I will go over there tomorrow or this weekend and get rid of SS and run a couple of online scans. Clean out some things as you mentioned and see if we can get SP2 going plus try a re-install of ewido.

To get rid of the "isactiveguard:regopenkeyex failed 5 0" error you need to modify the permissions for the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ewido" so that the group "SYSTEM" has full access. It could be necessary that you need to add the group group first.

Ok I am not sure how to do this. What is it that happened and why would permisson have been denied(?) or ewido denied access? I guess what I really need is what would cause this, for my own understanding, and how do I go about modifying permissions?

    Thanks in Advance

As a follow up, I did some reading and found out what it was I needed to do and this fixed the problem. I am guessing it is because he has a home wireless network and this caused the error. But after modifying the permissions everything seems to be in order now.

I get the same error (actually, its: isactiveguard: regopenkeyexfailed 2 0), but my permissions are set like you describe. For that particular key, Administrators, Local Users and System all have full access.

2 means: The system cannot find the file specified.

Have you already tried to reinstall the software?
