Is it really worth $30?

When I go to the forum the Discussion Forum menu under Help it takes me to http://www.dcsresearch.com/ which is well who knows.

I purchased a license to TCPViewPro when it was first released about 3 years ago and have been quite happy with it but when PortExplorer was released I purchased that and have not regretted it at all. The only feature I rely on TCPViewPro now for is the logging feature which will be integrated within PortExplorer shortly (I don't use that feature much anyway, only for malware analysis).

My reasons for favoring PortExplorer echo those given by others,

    * Easy to Use interface (without sacrificing on content of info)

    * Consolidation of functions in one app that would otherwise require multiple apps

    * More reliable data (IMHO)

    * Far better support

I fully appreciate that it is made more difficult for someone to come to a determination of this points when they have access to a somewhat crippled demo version but especially as your are a happy TDS user this should help you take for granted the quality of the components that you do not have access to in the demo.

    Ajax,
did you never visit the private forum then to register there? Several months ago we were warned about the changing forum address --the redirection only recently stopped-- and we had some threads there about entrance to the new place in the easiest ways, i even posted there a little script to enter both private and here the Wilders forum at button click.
I noticed after deleting possible wrong cookies first and then after logging in the private forum as a registered member of course, the F5 works for me again to bring me to the new proper place. The menuoption keeps sending to the old url.

    I'll try to.
(I don't know if this is an issue for you, and i don't want to embarrass the DCS people, but i want to mention that there has never been an official promise that once purchased all future updates will be free. When i was giving you the updates as an argument for the purchase, i was just inducing from such updates in the past (The update from tds-2 to tds-3 was free and the updates from tds-3 to tds-4 and from wg-3 to wg-4 are announced to be free as well).)

    Ok, on with it now:
Since PE's been on the show, we had i think about two releases and are beta-testing the third now. Always including features asked for by us/customers.
As with TDS-4, from time to time Wayne gives us a bite to check and/or comment on, like it was with ADS scanning (which is now even included in TDS-3.2.1) or with some single dialogues. So while we're indeed waiting (and have been waiting for some time, you're right), we can definitely confirm that there is work going on and that there eventually *will* be a tds-4. ...and that it will have been worth the wait.
The same goes for Wormguard4, but i don't keep track of it that closely.

Other ppl have mentioned the forum site change. Just pm anyone from dcs and i think they're gonna give you the new url.

    CU,
    Andreas

Wormguard 4 and TDS-4 are being worked on, it just takes time to finish high quality products :) . I was working on Wormguard 4 until I began working on this update to PE and it is getting to be near the BETA testing stage in itself (WG-4). So even though I was working fulltime on WG-4 I can still go back and do fixes and updates to Port Explorer when the need arises. You should always be able to find support for any DCS product either through the forums or email.

I better also jump in here :D

Port Explorer isn't a product that needs a lot of updating, we will continually add ports for the port lookup, and probably polish the product, who knows perhaps add some more languages if they are wanted.

TDS will always have database updates very frequently, and the new Wormguard will also have some/lots of updates :) These flagship products are being worked on to make them as good as possible, and there are literally countless improvements already in both programs. We have been making sure TDS specifically can do everything it needs to do against current and possible future trojan threats, most notably in detection and removal (..of course), but in other areas too :)

I've had PE for some time now (over a month) and I think it is worth the money to have all the features of this product in one place. It would be nice if the license allowed me to install it on more than one of my computers at home, but I knew that restriction when I bought it so I can't hold it against DCS. It would also be nice if the "consultant" version of the program were less expensive ($99 I think) as I would love to be able to use this program on customers boxes, but that too was known to me.
When I had a (XP) problem with the program crashing, Jason was very helpful getting the problem fixed and that fix will be in the new version. Can't ask for more than that.
I look forward to the new version and the logging capability.

I just registered PE and all I can say is its worth every penny I spent. It is truly a great product. I'm addicted to it. PE is the best way I've found of monitoring what's going on with your ports, you will learn a bunch.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

    take care.

PE is the first i start after reboot, then TDS.
I like to put hidden sockets under spy immediately, so i know what they are doing (firewall and such)
I'm sure you will be delighted by the next with logging and being able to save that log for future study or just clean it out, etc.
Jason is finetuning and ironing it with the beta testers, so guess it will be there soon.
I love to look what is sent out when emails have calling home advertisements, or unknown programs or websites, can analyse each packet and i like to block data sent from my computer in such cases!

Apart from price, how does it compare to "Commview 4.x"? Just curious o_O

Commview is just a packet sniffer, whereas packet sniffing is just one of Port Explorer's capabilities. Don't get me wrong though - Commview is an excellent packet sniffer :), but you can't really compare it to Port Explorer as they really aren't related

    Best regards,
    Wayne

I just wanted to thank everyone for responding in such a helpful and positive manner, I did purchase this program a week or so ago but forget my password and which free email account I registered with. An acquaintance had TCPView Pro and after comparing the two products along with less apps like ActivePort I could truly see this product stand out head and shoulder above the others. I'm loving it and using it daily and it was really sweet that soon after purchasing 1.35, 1.5 was release. Answered my concerns about lack of timely product updates. I also did get the forum addy for TDS-3, although it seems this forum is more active. Thanks again guys. There's a good group of people here.

Hi Ajax, welcome in the DCS family!
Many new users and triallers come here first as they don't have access to the private forum to ask their initial help and support questions.
So you build contacts and a lot can be found in the forums here.
The private forum we keep in general for the next stages, beta testing and Wayne's news/ announcements, secrets of secrets, scripting, etc. and all the rest people like to post there.
I jump one and back between the two, using the forum contents as a growing support manual. :D

    Hi x-scratch,

The license keys are processed manually by the staff in Australia. So, it's generally an issue regarding time zone differences at time of purchase, and in some cases weekends and holidays. Since it is Friday at 10:30am where DCS is located right now, I'd suspect you'll be contacted soon.

    Best Wishes,
    LowWaterMark

Todays orders are being processed now so all licenses will be sent within the next couple of hours. If you send your order during business hours (Perth time), you'll generally receive your license within 10 minutes :)
    Thanks for your patience
