microsoft anti spyware keeps downloading same update????

WTF why is this happening? its annoying is it broken or somthing??

 

I have the same experience.
My MSAS acts like it has never been installed and starts with the setup assistant and does the same updating over and over again.
Each time I open MSAS again the setup assistant and again the same updating.

 

mine says it updated and the update is installed and then i exit out and go update again and it updates it to the one it just updated to

 

you can fix the MSAS loop update by following these instructions. (I don't remember where I copied this from but it works just fine)

what will happen if i wait for the next update to come out will it accept that??

 

I uninstalled MSAS and re-installed MSAS :

how do you uninstall it properlly?

 

Right Click on the MSAS logo (system tray) and shutdown MSAS (any software has to be shutdown before uninstalling)

Click on Start / Settings/ Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs
and uninstall MSAS like any other software.

Normally that should be enough, but I don't think that MSAS uninstalls its registry completely. So I run my registry cleaner first.

Then reinstall MSAS and check for updates.


Although everything was OK, I still didn't like it, because I expected the "Setup Assistant" after uninstall/reinstall and that didn't happen. MSAS opened normally, ready to scan, which means that MSAS wasn't uninstalled completely.

 

how do u get it to uninstall completely?

 

I don't know, MSAS should do that job, but it doesn't.
I call that BAD programming.

That topic is about Windows XP, I use win2000pro.
Whatever it was, MSAS failed due to bad programming.
I can't blame MS anything yet, because it's a beta version.

Uninstalling software means : remove EVERYTHING and that's why I expected a "Setup Assistant", because that's how MSAS starts after the very first installation and that's the way how MSAS has to start after an uninstall/install, because typical users expect that this will happen.

Besides that, I wouldn't call MSAS very userfriendly, there is something wrong with that interface or do you call it GUI ?

 

I had the loop update problem also and I uninstalled and installed eight times with no fix. But the solution I posted in this thread fixed the problem immediatly It is really easier than it looks in the instructions.

 

Uninstall/re-install worked for me and I assume also for member "cheater87".
If it didn't work for you bigC and you had to use another method, I'm even more convinced that MSAS isn't able to handle its own updating.

bigC, I'm sure that your method also works. So don't take this personal.
What I don't like is that users have to use that method to fix an updating problem, while a simple uninstall and reinstall is supposed to be enough to fix that updating problem.
Any typical user and most other users will use the uninstall/re-install method to fix such a problem and that is also the most logical method and should be THE method for each software.

If an uninstall doesn't work I consider this as ABNORMAL. In other words BAD programming.
Programmers are also human and they make as many mistakes like anybody else. I work with programmers, so I have experience with programmers.
Uninstall is supposed to clean EVERYTHING like the software has never installed before, otherwise the word "uninstall" has to be replaced by another word.
EVERYTHING means all registries, all directories, all files, all settings, whatever, that is related to MSAS.

MSAS uninstall didn't do that, otherwise MSAS should have started with the "Setup Assistant", which is a 4 step guide with questions to install MSAS properly and that happens after the very first installation of MSAS.
After uninstalling/re-installing, MSAS should act the same way like the very first installation.

Member "Cheater" asked more than once, how to uninstall MSAS COMPLETELY, which is a very logical question.
If MSAS uninstall would have worked properly, Cheater wouldn't even asked that question and I asked myself the same question, when I discovered that MSAS uninstall didn't work properly.

We users don't have to fix this problem, MSAS has to fix that problem with better programming.
This counts not only for MSAS but also for ALL softwares.

No way I will take it personal. I just posted the solution in case anyone needed it. I am really glad that your problem was remedied without having to go into the windows files. Hopefully Ms will get the bugs ironed out before long. I do like the program and will like it much better when it is out of beta.

 

I agree with your reasons and I would have even mentioned this explicitly in my post, but with all these translations, I often lose my concentration on the subject.

I used the same fix as posted by Bigc, and I have to say it is very easy to do. Though I saw it posted at a different forum, not Wilders, when I initially did the fix.

After you do the fix you should restart your computer and try to update MSAS again to make sure it is working. MSAS should quickly tell you


* Most recent spyware definitions installed

* Most recent software installed

Am I suppose to report problems with the program to Microsoft? Or does someone from MS read these forums to find out how the program is working in the real world?

What is a good registry cleaner? I am very hesitant to mess with the registry.

 

OK. My MSAS BETA1 seems to be up-to-date now.
I installed the latest version over the previous version without any troubles.
Although I had "Spyware Definition Version 5735" already, I had to run update again to get version 5735 back.
What a mess Bill Gates !!!

I still don't have a SAFE Registry Cleaner that works without false positives.

So why not just download the latest version then and forget about editing the reg?

Its really strange. I have the same programme version and the same definition version but the date (of spyware definition version) is displayed as 12/7/2005!!
