Scan Speed of Ewido Free On-demand

Hi Folks

I did an online update of Ewido the other night and now seem to have a newer version.

Firstly, should I have uninstalled the earlier version and installed the new version afresh or am I ok just with the update ?

Secondly, on my machine (XP Home OS) Ewido free has always scanned very slowly - but last night doing a complete scan this new version took 30 mins to scan 11% ! Is that normal in anyone elses experience ? Also, I still get my screen blinking as it's refreshing whilst the scan is ongoing.

Having an issue with my old p500 320 meg ram machine that I'm trying to work out though.Stopped the scan after an hour with several thousand files being skipped.Will start another thread on this if I can't resolve the prob.

 

i can only assume that scanning speed has do with both the application and ur computer, so u might want to check what kind of computer you have. secondly disable/exit all background programs before running the scan or run it in safe mode.

I just ran a scan on my 3.5Ghz, 512M machine. Full scan. 218,00 objects (about half of them were files) took 20 minutes. If you have other real-time monitors (possibly your AV) that is also reading the files as Ewido is accessing them, this may cause some conflicts and excessive scan times. You can try shutting down any real-time monitors that you have, one-by-one, to see if you can isolate the problem.

I'll give it a whirl in Safe Mode and also with my AV off. Not running any other real time scanners. I'll also try my other on-demand scanner in those scenarios and see if that speeds up as well. Machine shouldn't be a problem I'm guesssing - AMD 2600 processor with 256 M

You should consider adding more RAM... The ewido engine does in memory decrompession of archives -> if you have very large archives this will cause Windows to swap a lot which has a dramatically impact on the performance...

 

or you can install faster memory like 2-2-2-5 so the result would be the same...2*512 @ 2-2-2-5 is the best...

OK here goes......

Results of scan in Safe Mode
118,361 files scanned - 21,035 skipped.
Total time 22 mins

Hung on 35.9 % for approx 6 mins
Hung on 39.5 % for approx 6 mins - scanning NT Service Pack Uninstall files
Hung on 39.6 % for approx 4 mins- scanning Service Pack files

Also ran A2 in Safe Mode -scan took 23 mins approx 12 mins scanning the same Service Pack Uninstall files and Service Pack files.

Any thoughts on these speeds and whether redundant files are being scanned. If so how can I safely remove them.

I take on board comments about increasing my Ram but I assume these scans are still comparitively slow.

Appreciate any comments.

Compared to what?

 

I have done in-depth scans with many AT and AV products (e.g. TDS-3, NOD32, KAV 5.0, Trojan Hunter, etc.) and I would judge Ewido's scans to be faster than average. But personally, speed does not matter much to me. The software can take all the time it wants. The deeper and more comprehensive the scan, the better it is for me. But the fact that Ewido does it faster, is a plus. It appears to be quite comprehensive based upon my own personal experiences.

I just updated to 3.5, the scans are def a bit quicker for me, just ran a scan, 144,519 objects in 15 mins, not bad at all.

When I said ' comparitively slow ', I suspected in comparison with other users, (I did phrase that badly !) which judging from Franklins and Matt_Smi's scans, would appear to be the case.

I do agree with RichRF that speed isn't really an issue - the product doing what it's supposed to is more the point.

However, I am still pretty new to these products and I am simply trying to get a handle on what suits me and my machine best and also that the products are scanning within fairly normal parameters. From these replies there seems to be no cause for concern and will add some Ram to increase my overall effiency as advised.

Oh by the way - do most of you do your on-demand scans in Safe Mode because being a bit heavy handed I suspect I'll wear out my F8 button fairly quickly !
