What? You mean the "perfect" browser wasn't so perfect? I thought Firefox was God's gift to safety conscious PC users.

OK, I like Firefox, I really do (using it right NOW, matter of fact).....but if Microsoft had just released a new browser and implemented all of these changes in the name of "safety", we'd hear endless jokes and remarks about "yeah, they HAD to improve the security because it was so bad....blah, blah, blah", and everybody KNOWS that we would. Just be consistent....anyone praising Firefox now needs to be just as complimentary towards Microsoft when an improved Internet Explorer browser is released (which apparently, IE7 will be released ahead of schedule and very possibly sometime this year).....

 

Installed Firefox 1.0.5 over Firefox 1.0.4 without any troubles.

Firefox 1.0.5 or IE7 doesn't matter to me. I don't look at names when I choose software.
I just want the safest, the simplest and the most comfortable browser.
IE6 is not the safest and certainly not the most comfortable browser.

For such a large company like MS with so much money and research, it took and takes a very long time to develop a new browser. ~snip~.
If IE7 has what Firefox has or even more, I ditch Firefox without regrets,
but I have many doubts that IE7 will be that better. I lost my faith in MS.
Creativity doesn't seem to exist at MS, MS prefers to buy ideas from other companies. Pffff

It's not only about IE, MS has alot of software that comes with Windows and Office that could be improved.
How long do I have to replace MS softwares with other better softwares ?
I'm tired of having double softwares on my computer.

Also, I heard someone say today that they lost all of their "bookmarks" and extensions with the upgrade. As much time as I spent getting FF to be exactly like I wanted, I don't know that I'm in any hurry to go through that process again anytime soon. Eventually, I'm sure I'll get around to it....but for now, FF 1.0.4 works just fine for me

 

I usually just uninstalled my older version first before installing the new one. But saving the profile first. Just in case.

All in all it will take me 5 - 10 mins max. I do it twice and one on my Win XPSP2 and the other one on Win2k.

OK, thanks Chew.....now, stupid question. How does one save their FF profile? I added an extension to allow Thunderbird to be accessed from the FF navigation toolbar (even though Outlook Express is still my default to open through Tools>Read Mail). I realize that re-adding extensions for the printer icon and bookmarks icon is simple stuff....but it's all the FOLDERS that I created and have saved bookmarks in, and the T-Bird extension that I wouldn't be in any hurry to duplicate again that would prevent me from downloading anytime soon...

 

the current version of roboform 'breaks' the new ff . . . they said it will take a couple of weeks for the roboform extension to be ready

 

I never use extension. I like it bare to the bone. So I am always on Safe Mode and log on as Limited User Account.

Just goto Run > Type in the blank space > %appdata% > Mozilla > Profile (should be one layer before that but check first).

Just copy the profile together with all your plugins and save them into a folder and there you go a back up profile.

So if you loose / damage your profile ... just copy and paste that into the Profile folder of Mozilla and there you go everything back to normal.

Well I truly installed Firefox 1.0.5 over Firefox 1.0.4. without uninstalling.

My version is now 1.0.5 according "Help/About Mozilla Firefox", in case of doubts.
All my previous settings in options were still there.
All my extensions were still there.
Unfortunately, I don't use bookmarks, so I can't tell anything about that.
And last but not least Firefox still works

I guess I'm lucky, but I keep on doing this until something happens.
After all, I'm not killing somebody, I'm just killing my lovely Firefox

Regarding backups, you can also make life simple and easy by using the dedicated MozBackup which saves every thing to a folder via a wizard and you can resurrect from if something happens.

Very handy. Saved my bacon once when I did something silly, restored EVERYthing back to new.

I use the Bookmark Backup extension myself.

When I need to reinstall FF, I uninstall it, and acutally DELETE my profile.

Then simply just reinstall FF. Then it is just a matter of copying one or however many files you tell this extension to back up to your newly created profile.

I copy a total of three files and I am back EXACTLY the way I was prior.

Give it a shot. (See attached pic for what it can backup).

As for backups - I go to C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Application Data
and zip up the folder named Mozilla.
Any problems and I just delete the Mozilla folder and unzip my saved Mozilla folder.

Everyone who uses Firefox should backup their profile.

I'm taking a look at MozBackup now - thanks for the heads up!

 

True but in most cases, when there is a problem, deleting the profile is a sure fire fix for most issues.

Then when you create a new one, you just need a few files and your back in business.

To me its overkill to backup the entire profile when you use bookmark backup. To each his own however.

I also bookmarked Tassie Devil's Mozilla backup utility as well.

Jag....I notice that one of the options is "Window layout"....would that backup and save an extension like the one I downloaded and used to attach the Thunderbird email client to the navigation toolbar? Or is it something else altogether?

 

I thought I would have a try with Deer Park Alpha 2. Its really nice and quite fast . Lots of little changes . the obvious one is mooxs firefox blue globe instead of the irriginal . Wonder if moox is involved here with this. Its real nice and tidy for an alpha and worth a play with.
