how does it work?

Does it make an exact copy of the partition/drive image, for example with fragmentation all over the place?

Or does it make a copy of all the file data, and when restoring it file by file effectively do a defragmentation on the run?

I am assuming the first . . .

From what I can see so far True Image 8 does not change the drive layout. But since True Image 8 does not include the swap file in the image, after restoring the image Windows will create a new swap file which will probably not reside in the same sectors as before the image.

Thank you for your interest in Acronis Disk Backup Software.

Acronis True Image includes only sectors with data into the image file (providing the file system is known and not corrupted). When restoring almost all sectors are stored on different places. Only sectors which place is significant for system performance are placed exactly where they were. Finally, you get the fragemnted drive and may need to perform a defragmentation manually after restoration.
