Spyware??????

Hi all,

Im new here, and didnt know where to post this.
Ive been looking on the net for an answer to this for ages, but to no avail.

When I am online (Broadband) I sometimes get some funny noises from my pc.

Sometimes it laughs in an evil voice, other times in a sarchastic sadistic voice, and other times it just makes a sound like a duck flying across the screen.

This is genuine by the way, even though it may sound strange.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be? Im stumped.

I am using Bitdefender AV and FW, and also have Zonealarm FW, as well as windows FW, and being on XPSP2.

Hope someone can help.

have you tried installing Spysweeper (free trial) and let it scan in safe mode?

u should not use 2 firewall at the same time if i were u i would disable windows firewall and stay with zonealarm.

as well u need at least 1 antispyware but i recommend 3 free antispyware

adaware se-free
spybot-search & destroy
Microsoft antispyware

as well there is another free program called spywareblaster that it prevents spyware from coming to ur computer in the first place.

 

And I tell you this: If I heard those noises, I would run as hell

 

Sorry, forgot to add, I have MS antispyware, I use AOL anti spyware, Ad-aware SE, and spyware doctor.

Should I just run one of these in safe mode?

Also, should I use my Bitdefender firewall (came with package I bought) or my free version of Zone Alarm?

Infiity, believe me, I nearly did the first time I heared it!!! Sh*t myself!!!

 

They say the first thing to go is memory....but I remember something similar and can't recall specifics at the moment but it had to do with chat programs

 

I believe you Purpledragon...but I never had that experience you are mentioning...my first answer was even this: look if there are no voiceplayers near your puter lol...

update your ms antispyware, download SpySweeper trial and let it update. boot your computer in safe mode and let it scan.
Off course you clean it after that and clean your all your obsolete files/leftovers with CCleaner:

Check all items, and let it clean everything up. Even the registry.

And I'll clean any leftovers...that means if it *IS* spyware related...

 

I've definitely read of similar symptoms in a thread here at Wilders in recent months.....just can't seem to find it using search.

I ran spysweeper, and Ive also run my MS software and it hasnt got rid of it.

Have you taken a look at the Task Manager, purpledragon, to see if there is any unknown process that is running that you do not recognize? It could take a while doing it this way, but you could do a Google search for all of your active running processes...to see if anything comes up that shouldn't be there.

When I was younger and did stupid things like download "Virtua Girl" to my desktop just to see this hot blonde strut across my desktop shaking her T&A, I didn't realize that I had actually downloaded SPYWARE! It could be something that came bundled with some legitimate software....who knows. The duck quack sounds more funny than annoying, but the evil voices and sinister laughs don't exactly sound too appealing.....

Furthermore, If I were you I would 'search' my HDD for .WAV files. It may turn up the source?? Try Locate32 or just use the windows search. System sounds are in C:\WINDOWS\Media.

No files found with the search. Ive tried all sorts of spyware progs, it still happens.

Is my computer laughing because of a virus?

Sometimes the most obvious solution is the right one...


I appear to have picked up a virus that has not been detected by my own AV program, VET, or an online check by McAfee Clinic. It does not appear to be one I can send to anyone else, as it cannot be found. The payload appears to be just an eerie laugh that comes from the 'System' speaker. This tells me that it is in my BIOS. This can be confirmed, because only today I removed all the cables from the PC and as I was carrying it to my desk, it laughed. This is not a joke. It's driving me nuts. How do I get rid of it?


Hmm, well I hope you'll excuse us from being so cynical but it is highly unlikely that you are the victim of a virus, more likely you're probably the unwitting target of a practical joke. The fact that three separate virus checkers cannot find the virus should be indication enough, but the real clincher is when you unplugged the power leads and it still happened. We've also checked several virus encyclopaedias and found no reference to laughs emanating from computer speakers. There's not much room in the BIOS for anything other than your BIOS information, so it would be quite difficult for a virus to hide in there, and also, the CMOS battery is far too small to power the onboard speaker. We suggest you take the lid off your PC and have a look inside as it sounds as if someone has put something inside to wind you up.

might be worth a look inside the box? if nothing else it may lessen the pain.

 

How do I do this? I do have AIM, as AOL is my ISP

My wife n I use aol, the aol buddy list has options
where u can use icons that come with sounds, so if
you have people on ur aol buddy list check to see if
you hear those noises when they log on and off aol.

If you are using AOL, go to the Buddy List and click on Setup. When the Setup window opens, click on IM Settings and then the Expressions tab. The bottom two options set to "Do Not Play Sounds" should stop your problem...assuming you have AOL. I don't use AIM, but I suspect there may be similar options in it too.

What Antivirus are you using? Cause if it's a worm/trojan then the first would be your av to detect. if it's classified under malware/spyware/keylogger...then I suggest to trial Ewido. Let it update and scan in safe mode...that could be a solution.

 

Im using Bitdefender. I read some good articles about it. I will try it in safe mode if the AIM hasnt cured the problem.

Do you live anywhere near a freeway? It sounds to me like bleed-over from something like a CB radio.. I used to get it all the time in the last place I lived.. computer speakers seemed particularly prone to this kind of thing, for some reason. CB'ers tend to make all sorts of weird noises (heh, I used to be one), and truckers like to "tweak'n'peak" their radios to push out more wattage, which can increase bleed-over quite a bit. Even if you don't live right next to a freeway, it could be from a major street or someone in their car.

 

I have the same problem with the computer intermittently laughing this has been going on for some six months could somebody please tell me how to get rid of this problem.
