my bro is putting spyware on the computer

i think hes going to adult sites. what can i do to stop him? i activated spywareblaster on his account which wasn't active all the way had some 200 things not protected. i scan every day with adaware SE, spybot 1.4 and microsoft anti spyware. the thing is with spybot i have to be in the person's account to scan it. his account is password protected. also we have firefox for extra protection. please help. i don't want him visiting the sites.

 

I hope you have a router. In there you can close all kind of things. If not: buy one....

 

If you have admin priveleges you can limit what can be done on his account, whether it's password protected or not (I hope the admin logon is password protected).

You can also use programs like PrevX Pro in combo with Process Guard, which will keep the computer pretty much spyware free (at least, it does on mine).

You could download Microsoft Antispyware and enable the realtime protection on it (it's a pretty good, and free program. Currently better than spybot and adaware).

Ewido is a free anti-trojan program (ondemand scan only for the free version).

You can use a HOSTS file (to avoid known adware pages)

If you are wanting parental control (ie preventing him from visiting porn sites altogether), IE has a form of it (if you use admin priveleges to limit other accounts), some routers/hardware firewalls have a form or it, or you can obtain specific parental control programs (sorry, don't know any off the top of my head)

Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Registry, the web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs on your PC.

Ie-spyad2 applies the settings to all users of the computer.

 

One option may be using IE's Content Advisor.

There are links to two rating systems ( I think they're both free), ICRA & SafeSurf, in the column on the right hand side of the page.

If you use a router, perhaps you can block known spyware sites, like windupdates.com and such.

Maybe install a firewall as well to block sites and ads (Outpost). And perhaps use hpguru's hpHOSTS to block advertising domains.

 

Parental Guided Porn for your brother is also a possible solution

 

If you want to be ahead of those nasties:

at least get something serious about security..with all due respect to everyone!!! ...

install Ewido, TDS or A2 and trial it out .. I mean hunt those things down and try to learn from it.

If its family owned by Dad and Mom then its their responsiblity to correct your brother.......an not your's. This is your brother an not your son.
This sort of thing happens in homes around the world. The parents fail to supervise.
Censorship should be the sole task of the parents....not the brother or sister.

 

I have to comment on this. Your brother is visiting adult sites to look at obscene content?
The BEST way you can avoid the computer from being infected is to teach your brother to STOP VISITING the adult sites. Installing security programs and tweaking your computer security helps, but if your brother stops visiting those adult sites it would be even much better.
What's so nice about those adult sites? Is it very nice to look at?

There isn't a host file or IE-SPYAD list in the world that will keep anyone from getting to porn sites. Sure, those two things will help, but they're not the answer.

I've gotta question whether it's even this young ladies business to try to control her brothers' surfing (this being a sibling situation, not a parent/child one).

If it truly bothers her that much (or if his surfing habits are fouling up the computer), then she needs to install a copy of Index.dat Suite, document the sites he's visiting and hand the list over to the parents here and let them handle the situation however they see fit.

I didn't catch the last part of that before.. is this a system that the family does online banking, shopping, ebay, or anything else involving sensitive/financial information? Your parents may want to take a look at this (and more here) about CWS.

 

If it's not your PC, I'd give up trying to help, and let him sort out his own mess. If the 'rents come hollering about the problems on the computer, you can say "Ah, but I ain't the one using it, am I?"

 

i found CWS on my dad's account and got rid of it with spybot.
