    Gentleman (and ladies),

I wanted to get everyone's valued opinion on a piece of software and my overall software configuration.

I purchased an anti-virus program called Solo Antivirus prior to finding this great security forum. Does anyone have an opinion on how this product performs? Unfortunately there are no reviews comparing it to other products.

    I have the following system:

    AMD Athlon 1600XP
    1 GB RAM
    Cable connection

    I currently run:

    BOClean (just purchased today :)
    SpyBot S&D
    jv16
Regvac (learning how little it does clean)
    Window Washer 4.8

I am thinking of purchasing TH as well for it's file scanning (I know TDS-3 is very good, but I hate it's interface...very bad)

I guess my main question would be what holes should I fill and also, if you had to set someone up with the best AV, would it be NOD32, RAV, Avast! or...is the one I'm running going to fit the bill?

    Thanks in advance,

    Bill

  2. I guess you are the "Solo" user of Solo Antivirus .. :D

Never heard of it.. Just from the website, it kinda scares me.. It looks like it won't work on WinXP.. I can't say, and I am happy with NOD32..

TH is great.. I am currently trialing it now.. Already found a trojan my nephew downloaded of the net (NetDevil 150)

Sorry I can't help you more...

If it is any good, it is not very expensive :)

But never heard of. How did you find it? There is not even a press release mentioning their own releases o_O

btw: you've got a lot of security software, but I saw no mention of firewall related stuff, don't forget to install a fw, as you're a cable user.

Thanks for all of the quick responses!

I apologize, I wrote this last night half asleep.

I run NPF 2003 (I know...the dreaded 'N'orton word. I really liked Sygate, LookNStop and Kerio's firewalls but had various issues with trying to setup my VPN connection and playing Battlefield 1942 :) I will go back and do some more playing around with these three but NPF really works well for me at the moment.

I've purchased two programs based on user reviews on download.com...the aforementioned Solo AV and PopUpCop. Solo received very high user ratings and as you said, it was not expensive, so I figured I would go for it. (it also has a very small footprint). I have not had a virus (or at least not detected by Solo) so it's kind of hard for me to say if it's been satisfactory or not.

PopUpCop is a great Popup/script/ActiveX, etc blocker. The developer is very involved with the users. His site is http://www.popupcop.com

Hopefully I'll come to a conclusion on the AV decision...makes it hard when there are so many good products available.

I have never heard of it either. I have never seen it in any of the comparison tests, so I shouldn't slam it without investigating a little farther.
I did notice they claim to be internationally recognized in the field, and I would disagree with that. Their press releases consist solely of viruses showing up.
I assume it is relatively new, and it takes time for new products to gain recognition and even more time for information for their effectiveness to become known.
My advice to anyone using this would be to have it available as a third string scanner, for evaluation purposes only.
I am not one to advocate using a program solely because it is popular. However, when it comes to virus and trojan protection, I highly advise using one or two of the mainstream products that have proven themselves to be effective over a period of time.
I think we all have spent some money on products that strike our fancy, only to find out later, our money would have been better spent elsewhere. At times like that, I bite the bullet and spend some more money on the product I should have bought in the first place.
Such is the learning process. ;)

I thought I already know every available antivirus program. o_O This one is really new to me

I assumed it is not a real good one as otherwise it would already been mentioned somewhere. Might be as secure as all the mentioned personal firewall products. ;) I would not recommend it to use as the only primary malware protection.

    To WYBaugh from Firefighter!

It's better to use always two av-programs, because no one is perfect. I recommend DrWeb and RAV, after that there is no need to more anti-trojan program, but if SpyBot is anti trojan, then that!

DrWeb and RAV are quite cheap programs together, and very good archives scanning capability belongs to the price too! DrWeb is also very light on resources as a resident and the absolute top in the Wild!

    Good hunting!

Hi Wybaugh, You may find mailwasher http://www.mailwasher.net/ a very practical free addition to your software , whether or not you make any changes to your present anti virus anti trojan programmes.

    To WYBaugh from Firefighter again!

It is important to add, that DrWeb's and RAV's possible weaknesses are different, so they are complementing each others!

    Firefighter,

This thread is all about "solo antivirus". No doubt you are entitled to your own opinion in regard to antiviruses, but please stick to the subject, and refrain from degressing by turning it into "various antiviruses".

    Thanks in advance.

    regards.

I have heard of Solo anti-virus.It gets recommendations at another forum that I visit.I never tried it.I have been to the home page. The only reservations I have about Solo are:it isn't listed by VirusBulletin web site.I look to that site for test results when I look at av programs.I'd feel a lot more comfortable if someone in this forum had the program and had feedback about it.It's basically an unknown program. That can be good or bad.I am very cautious about trusting my system to an av program.I'd pass on Solo untill I found something concrete and positive about it.User feedback can be good depending on where it is coming from.I prefer feedback from a forum like this one where there are experienced security people.
