good (on demand) backup F-prot or Dr. Web

Just curious what you guys think would be a good backup for NOD32. I tried to install the lastest KAV but freezed up on reboot. I've already been through Avast so that's over. I want to try a couple more before settling down. Your suggestions would be welcome. Thanks for your input.

 

How about BitDefender Free? Good signature engine and improving heuristics.

Free, and you do even have to install the program. This will therefore lessen the chances of any possible conflicts.

Unpack the Archive, and simply run drw_start.

F-Prot for DOS is also free and very good, but not the best if you have a Win NT system.

You could also use Kaspersky Anti-Virus Web Scanner

 

KAV froze up my desktop upon installing then booting. I even disabled NOD to do so. I have tried Cureit and Escan. I think perhaps one with better detection than NOD and more resource usage (because they will be "midnight" scans so it won't matter) and perhaps the ability to bootscan. That way I will be covered with more angles. NOD for general daytime use and some "on demand" for bedtime use.

 

escan is the hands down winner then.

I am too looking for an on-demand AV to backup NOD32, I tired BD and it seems like a great AV, but it adds 5 additional startup entries and runs two extra background processes even when it is not in the system tray, too much for an on-demand scanner IMO. I have also got the Dr. Web Cure it scanner, I like how it does not even need to be installed and can just be run from the folder. But I cannot update it, the option is grayed out, do I need to do it manually somehow? Does EScan need to be installed, or is it like Cure it? Does it run additional processes? Are both Cure it and EScan free for unlimited use?

Nope. It does do a memory and system scan on Windows startup if you configure it to do so

Yes, you need to manually update; http://download.drweb.com/bases/

And you can also use the beta spyware/riskware bases; just sign up here and then use the Username and Password they send you.

It looks like CureIT is free for the forseeable future.

 

Or you can use your download manager to redownload the bases every few hours using the schedule feature ... remember to feed in the username/password
www.freedownloadmanager.org is a possible choice [I use it]

 

Do I just download the latest one from that site and then extract all the files from the ZIP folder into my Dr. Web Cure It folder? Then it is updated and good to go? because I did that but I cant find anyplace in the program that tells you if you have the lastest defs. Thanks.
