Let's talk some Video Games!

I hope I am not the only gamer here.

My avatar and name is based on the video game Commander Keen which was the first game I fell in love with.

I have recently been playing a lot of WoW. I know a lot of people who have played other MMORPG's (massive multiplayer online role play game) and are kind of sick of the genre by now (finding it rather repetitive). But for me this is my first MMORPG, and having enjoyed Diablo II, it was a pretty natural transition. I hear the high end game of WoW is boring as there is not much to do at lvl60 , and the monthly fee definitely sucks but so far i am thoroughly enjoying the game. Maybe if enough people play WoW here, we can start a guild

Guild Wars is also soon to be released. And it looks to be rather interesting. Some of the features seem pretty innovative for an MMORPG, but the content seems lacking at the moment.

I also want to play Half Life 2 (didnt want to buy it until i upgraded my system). I really enjoyed the first Half Life. The story and atmosphere is really amazing for a FPS. If you have never played a FPS (first person shooter) the original Half Life is a pretty nice place to start.

Ive played some pretty bad games recently too. One of the most disappointing was Sid Meier's Pirates. I really enjoyed other games by him like Colonization (which is now abandonware i think) and Civilization. But this game was horribly disappointing and boring, especially after reading such good reviews about it. After 30 minutes and just learning how to get around in the game I was already bored. Sword fights and ship battles are all very repetitive as well as the interaction between other characters you meet. There is also no strategy involved in the game either. Lack of customization was also a serious flaw in my eye.

Half-Life 2 is a really good game....if only I could get past that damn Steam activation system! For some reason it doesnt work fine on my dialup connection

Civilization was great. So was Diablo 2.

I still play delta force on and offline got a few other games but just like DF.

I'm currently playing WOW on Azgalor, guilded with the Ruthless Warriors. I die quite a bit, but the horde hate me. As it should be. I just love being ganked by 20 horde at a time.

I'll play Guild Wars after I get tired of WOW. I'm not too impressed with Guild Wars so far; I pre-ordered it and they sent me a pre-cd to play on. It seems there are quite a few issues that need to be fixed; honestly I think the game just flat out sucks. I hope to God the actual game is better then what they sent me last month. It's on the way so I'll find out pretty soon.

My all time fave has got to be Zork. The first one mind you. Now you know I am older then dirt. Nothing but DOS, simplicity at its finest. It's one of the reasons I like TDS-3, because it looks DOS-SY to me.

Quake 1, back in the dial up days, got me really hooked on online FPS games. Playing against other people, to me, is the BIG fun factor. I'll play single player when I get a new game, just to briefly check out how it plays..then immediately go over to online multiplayer only.

Quake 1/2/3, Unreal Tournament, Half Life 1 was fun online, don't enjoy Half Life 2 online. Half Life 1...best single player game ever IMO. Doom 3 was fun single player, but boring online IMO.

Then the big one...Battlefield 1942, and Battlefield Vietnam. Oh boy are those fun online.

Those are some pretty solid selection of games Firecat. The Grand Theft Auto series is great, though I never did get into San Andreas like I did GTA3 and Vice City. I think it was a little too ghetto hah.

Starcraft was definitely a very addicting game. The Lurkers that came out in the expansion (Brood War) were a lot of fun!

AirJer... The ganking and zerg fest has definitely increased with the new honor system on PvP servers. And the alliance are just as bad when it comes to ganking Being a horde warlock on an alliance heavy PvP server, I would know haha. I get the same impression about Guild Wars. It seems like it has the potential, but at this moment it looks so incomplete. It doesn't appear to have enough content and only one playable race.

Quake was very fun as well. Quake 2 was a big jump from the first Quake.

 

I love playing lots of games butmy son loves zelda he was zeld for a costume party we had when he was in kindergarden now he is 11 and still loves that game .

Lately I have finally removed the WoW monkey from my back and have been playing SH3 and Stronghold 2.

Tiger Woods 2005 is a fixture on my system.

for me, i have never had a good computer with a standalone graphics until just a few months ago. i also only tried one demo, that is unreal tournament 2004. its a bit old but its a great game and i love it. i decided to buy it, maybe i should try some other games too.

 

I started on the Coleco-vision myself

Anway, some friends and I still play "C&C Generals: Zero Hour" almost daily. if you like a fast playing RTS it really is a very fun game overall - the ZH expansion added the individual generals to the factions (3 each) and really gave a lot more replayability.

Another RTS I'm having a good deal of fun with lately is "Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War." One 4 factions/races to play and kinda small maps but I just got a bunch of custom maps and the game has a very different feel to it - squad based instead of individual unit based like the C&C series.

On the roleplaying side I'm about to finish "Star Wars Knights of the old Republic 2" on the light side then I'll replay it with a different character focus and play the dark side route The combat might be a little tedious but it's worth it to use the turn-based (autopause) in order to get the most out of your characters - this way you actually have the time to tell each one what to do.

For a FPS I've been playing "Star Wars Republic Commando" and I'm pretty impressed - usually I like my FPS more along the lines of Operation Flashpoint with huge maps and one shot kills ya.. but this is a pretty fun slug-fest game where you've also gotta keep on your toes ordering your 3 squadmates around. Graphics and effects are great IMO.

I am very much looking forward to "Empire Earth 2" which is coming out but I'll probably wait for it to go down in price as I usually do.

I saw someone earlier here mention "Stronghold 2 (Crusader)" and I need to dust that one off - it is a LOT of fun. You become the lord/lady of the castle, building farms for wheat, hops, etc and dairy farms. Have people mine iron to make weapons, but you need weaponsmiths for each type. The leatherworking woman is the greatest, taking cows from the dairy farm and turnin' 'em into leather armor. You can build parks and maypoles etc to become a beloved ruler, or gallows and such torture devices to instill fear and make 'em work faster I hadda plug that one - it's great... oh and don't forget to dig a wide moat else the invaders will just fill it in

 

Well Im on WoW now but still pretty burned out with MMORPG after three years+ on Everquest.
My favourite game is the old Bullfrog title Powermonger. It plays on my ancient laptop but no sound. I miss the bleating of the sheep and mumblings of the troops.

 

Reading what you said about some of the games you played Detox, I am curious if you played Rome Total War. I think that was one of the first games that I wanted to play and then realized my computer could barely meet the bare minimum requirements.

A lot of people seem to be big fans of Everquest 1. They say it was like one of the most complete MMORPG. I wish I would have played it in its prime

lol you said Colecovision! i actually still have mine, along with the expansion modules 1 & 2. i also kept my Atari 2600 and my old NES with that stupid robot it came with to play Gyromite. i dunno why, but when i'm really drunk, i like to hide behind the couch and play duckhunt. lol

 

I have been reading many good reviews about Guild Wars lately. Hardly any bad ones. It seems it is a lot more like Diablo rather than the traditional MMORPG. The screen shots I have been seeing though look really amazing. I think I am going to get it, between Guild Wars and WoW I may never see the light of day again

 

No, but I play its predecessor still - though not every day... That's "Medieval:Total War" if anyone doesn't know for sure. I kinda looked at "Rome" and thought "hey this seems to be narrowing down the action.. there were something like 14 factions you could choose to play in medieval and it's hard to think that Rome could be as good - but maybe it's better?

 

Ah - adn an update on the "Star Wars Republic Commando" - I give it a thumbs down now - until it hits about $20 USD in the stores. Sure, the sounds and graphics are truly awesome, but there is a relatively small selection of weapons and you only encounter about 10 different types of enemies... The game is SHORT! I think I finished it in 8 hours total play and I do not see any replayability factors here at all - the only thing they did *SPOILER AHEAD*
