i just made an observation about bitdefender,i dont know whether i am wrong.its just my observation..

bitdefender is adding lots of defenitions right now per update. today the total defenitions are 141368,while for kaspersky its 126020 today with xbases.. about 1-2 months ago when bitdefender defenition count reached 100000,kaspersky had about 112000 or so..it has surpassed kaspersky now..

today i got an update of 1400kb containing about 1500 defenitions.(in 2 days)
so its good news..considering the unpacking support it has and the wide database now it possess and the forthcoming hive technology regarding heuristics,i think bitdefender is coming to the top spot..

hope that they also correct some update problems experienced by some of our users..

also can somebody confirm this?has anybody noticed this??
    :D

Yes, they are adding lot of stuff they missed in the last February test of av-comparatives. If they continue this way, they will score quite good in August.

I don't buy this... if the results are related to the sheer number of signatures, compared to Kaspersky, then Bitdefender will probably score more than 100%.. KAV reached 99.65 %, Bitdefender got to 94%. So with 15 % more signatures uhhhmmm. There must be some other factor to influence the effictiveness of a scanner, right?

I have noticed bitdefender adding many new definitions for weeks now, particularly trojans and trojan downloaders. Not a scientific observation, but a casual one, whenever I check on new KAV & BD defs added to GData AVK the BD ones generally seem to be more.

My only hopes is that they improve their free scanner. No services for On demand scanner.

I have been noticing that the partial implementation of HIVE has helped BD a lot at jotti's with "behaveslike" detections.

If this is what a partial implementation can do, the full HIVE is going to be wonderful!

The full HIVE heuristics engine can even intercept system calls.

    Regards,
    Firecat :D

Just now BitDefender 8.0 Std by passed Ewido (1638/1755) against my 1755 trojanlike samples, scoring 1647/1755, ten more than two days ago. Total scoring now 3400/3665 and against "Common PC Protection" level, without riskware, 3200/3378 (94.7 %), not bad. Already 22 detections more than McAfee VSE 8.0i with ASPy module had two weeks ago in "Common PC Protection" level.

    Best regards,
    Firefighter!

There has also been a significant increase in the frequency of BitDefender updates with GDATA AVK, not as frequent as the KAV updates (more or less hourly), but much, much closer.

Once HIVE is fully implemented, I'm sure many people will want GDATA AVK.....:)

That also could be a good thing. Means all the AV companies are competing.

:D i was just about to post the same thing commment 'Just wondering'!

one minute he is Bitdefender, then he is NOD32, the cat can't make up his mind!! Come to the NOD32 camp, its great over here - we have everything you need, and never have cause to complain!!
The problem is, you wait for something new to come out, then it comes out, and then there is always something newer on its way soon after...that's the beauty/annoyance of computing!

    Yes correct.
I remember the times when firecat was a betatesting Arcavir fan....
    What's about this?
Arcavir isnt't that bad - it has just messed up with fileextensions during last VB test - otherwise it's looking good so far for arcavir!
Heuristics could be improved, but hey, atleast arcavir has a better heuristic than symantec, trend and even kaspersky. Regarding Kasperksy i'm not speaking about generic detections like RDbot-based - only heuristics.

Firecat is a nice guy, but doesnt have a deep knownledge about antivirus technologies therfore he is unsure what to use/what to buy.

For now, its gonna be what is currently being, i.e. ArcaVir.

Hehe...and dont worry, I still am an ArcaVir fanboy :D

OK...I think its time to go download an AT. Thats all I need alongside ArcaVir.

ArcaVir lacks some professional tests. Thats why I feel a bit unsure of it.

    Firecat :D

Now, do any of you know where stormbyte (Mariusz) is? I need to ask him a few questions (about ArcaVir of course :D)....About the 2006 beta :)

Dont worry this is final :)

In the last AV Comparatives test several AV publishers showed a very large improvement in detection percentages. I guess they have relized that people read and make purchasing decissions based on those tests.

Some of this may also be an awakening to the fact that a lot of the most dangerous malware is no longer self replicating. A few AV publishers have taken the position that a program has to be self replicating to be a virus and deserve a place in its signature database.

The question is whether Bitdefender is simply playing catch up from a known selection of malware, or are they going to be maintaining their AV with the latest and greatest malware signatures.

My conclusion is this is a good development, not just at Bitdefender, but also for Eset and Symantec. It would be nice if the spread in detection performance among major AV's becomes smaller than it has been in the past.

Thanks for that.... Mariusz said, "It was more then incorrect settings. Right now I'm not at liberty to say anything about it..."

Interesting.. BitDefender was on my shortlist of AV's I really liked. However I encountered some bugs and software issues with it. But I did find it exceptionally light - almost as light as Dr.Web.

If they continue to improve it, I might be tempted to try it out. I notice many people change AV's at the drop of the hat. I tend to stick with the same one - as long as it does the job and is super lightweight and never conflicts with anything, i'm happy. ;-)

I can relate to what has been said about Firecat. I'm probably a salesman's dream come true. :D

I think I have tried and/or purchased just about every AV out there. I have a terrible time making up my mind. o_O At the moment I own two AV licenses. BitDefender and NOD32. I'm getting tired of switching back and forth. I'm going to have to make up my mind or go completely insane. :p Of course my wife believes I've already reached that stage. :D
