help, i've been stupid!

hi,

i use nod32 for antivirus, but yesterday i was at a loose end and thought i'd try kaspersky and bitdefender to test their scanners. i turned of nod32's resident on access scanning (amon) and installed the two programs, disabling the on-access scanners on both. i ran kaspersky which ran for an hour and then it got stuck at 44%. i killed it off and decided i'd uninstall both of the programs. another confession: i updated my pc from ms windows updates which included a few criticals, inc new windows installer. SO i rebooted my pc for the first time after doing the ms updates and kaspersky and bitdefender installs.

Now windows starts ok, gives me the desktop and then hangs after a few minutes, i just get the hourglass. task manager shows nothing running high. i disabled startup programs using msconfig and that didnt make a difference.
I tried rebooting to safe mode and uninstalling and i get an error that there is a problem with the windows installer - eeek. also i turned off system restore earlier this week and forgot to turn it back on.

In summary, i cant really use my PC now, i THINK the problem is kaspersky after reading some of the threads on wilders, i just want to know - what do i do now?!?! has anyone had anything similar happen and use the suggestions posted at wilders, and if so which one works best?

And, yes, i have learned my lesson, boredom can be dangerous.

There was a update to a new version of windows installer on the windows update site (Windows Installer 3.1). Maybe thats part of the problem you describe?

thanks for your reply SSK, i dont think the windows installer must have installed properly (some irony there me thinks), but i'm at fault here for installing too many things without a restart and for having 3 AVs running at the same time.

Anyhows, its all better now - i downloaded and reinstalled the windows installer, RESTARTED and was able to uninstall KAV and BD, i also ran the KAV registry cleaner.

PC and PC owner happy again, and NOD32 becomes an only child once more....until the next boring afternoon comes along.

NOD is a great AV. For a boring afternoon, I suggest you go to bed and lie down and close your eyes

Hi Lee, if you want to play with software it is best to use imaging software 1st.

First comment: Firecat don't advise people to go to such sites - no AV does detect all things - so maybe he get's infected! That is in your language "mutal tanam" (Don't have charset installed so i have to write this with english charset )

Second comment: He's a little bit older He probably prefers a beer or womans on boring afternoons

yep, imaging s/w will be my next investment! and i like happy's suggestion of beer and women...though the beer is a lot easier to come by than the women. thanks all.

dont want to be attracting the wrong sort of woman though, unless NOD32 can clean those sorts of viruses too.....?

 

Take pictures of them and submit the suspicious ones - i'll have a look at them and advise you

surely all women are suspicious - they install themselves in your life, take over your house/flat and change it all around, monitor your shopping and then suggest things you should be buying, take your bank/credit card details and clean you out!

completley agreed happy bytes!!! and the red heads should be some kind of malware based on how firey they usually are!!

I can usually predict things with a 60-80% (varies from time to time) success rate so far. Does that make my brain an excellent heuristics engine?

Y'see, I checked out the NOD 2.5 beta - and it contains many features which I thought were coming for NOD32.

I also predicted that KAV 2006 will no longer use ADS - and I was right

 

Firecat, If you can predict a woman's features when you see her then you definitely have an excelent brain heuristics
