    Joe,
No need to make the partition hidden (at least if you are using Windows XP). It should not be marked as "active," of course. A partition containing an image file(s) (as opposed to a partition containing a clone of an operating system partition) will be seen by XP as simply containing data files.

For Windows XP, I don't think NTFS vs. FAT32 will make any difference with respect to the issues we have been addressing. Yes, many forms of DOS cannot see NTFS, and neither can Windows 9x/ME. But unless you have a specific need in mind for those OS's, NTFS is usually far preferable due to reduced susceptibility to file table corruption, avoidance of the 4gB file size limit, etc.

    Regards,

FWIW - Hidden because it's my wife's machine, the less showing the better. Since the subject utility can backup up to a hidden drive, I just as soon not make it visisble to the operator.

Her old system had started as a Windows 98 system, then was upgraded to 2000, so I can't really say the backup strategy was working all through that period, but it was at one point in time. Hence my confusion as to why I couldn't do the same thing here.

Well, I guess I have some studying to do, but this solution will work, and if she has a problem I could always walk her through it if I'm not there. Thanx again to all.

    Joe
