When a prog hangs I can't end it with Task Manager because Task Manager is protected by PG. If I remove the protection I am removing it from all progs as far as I understand. Should I allow Task Manager to be able to terminate programs

Hi TechDunce, Yes Task manager should be on the protection list with the default allows + the Terminate Protected applications. Personally I do not do this but switch termination on should it become necessary.
I should add that generally I use sysinternal's Process Explorer as an alternative to TM :)

Are there any security advantages to using this program over TM?

If you have TaskManager on your protection list with the terminate allow it should be able to terminate any process that hangs whether the program is on the protection list or not.

Yes, theoretically Task Manager could be compromised and if it did the malware would have the tool available to kill any process. This is one of the reasons I use Process Explorer as it is not as likely to be targetted by malware and anyway, to me, it is a much more useful tool than TM. :)

    Hi RossA,

In my opinion, Process Explorer enhances security by providing substantially more process information than Task Manager can.

Does this program install over TM, ie will CTRL-ALT-DEL bring up process explorer rather than TM?

No install required. Just run it from a folder of your choice and select the option to replace Task Manager. Once enabled, CTRL-ALT-DEL will bring up Process Explorer.

Indeed I found it but at first I thought it was a reference to a part of windows rather than an third party prog
