I use Firefox and disable Cookies from all sites unless they are in my exceptions list. I also have Ad-aware SE, Ad-Watch, PG, TDS, WormGuard and KAV.

    From my understanding,

    1) SpywareBlaster would not offer me any extra protection because I use FF and only allow cookies from sites in my exceptions list.

    2) SpywareGuard would only offer me protection through it's Real-time Scanning Engine, which scans every EXE or CAB before it's opened. However, surely I'm already protected by TDS (Execution protection), Ad-Watch, KAV (Real-time Scanner), WormGuard.

Download Protection is irrelevant because I use FF. Browser Hijack Protection is irrelevant because I use FF (I also run Ad-Watch which protects my IE homepage and alerts me if BHO added).

Do I really need SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard ?

I would agree that it's questionable whether you need realtime scanning by more than one product but is there one single product that is infallible. Scanning by more than one product is more resource hungry but it's a matter of choice how paranoid we get about our own security.

SpywareBlaster does place block items in the cookie exceptions list for Firefox but as you say it may not be necessary if you are controlling cookies carefully and only allowing sites you trust to place cookies on your PC.

It's really down to personal preference and I'm sure we are sometimes utilising too much time and effort (and PC resources) to get ultimate protection, something which is probably impossible anyway. It's a good point you raise.

As a Firefox user, I have often wondered the same thing. This has been brought up before but, never really answered. I have both SpwareBlaster and SpywareGuard installed. I don't use Internet Explorer except for two secure web sites, not even for updates. I've got IE screwed down supertight, which includes firewall rules that block everything except those two sites. I manage cookies with Firefox, blocked except for those in my exeption list. I really see no advantage to using either program. Of course I still have them installed and SG is active as I type, though I am seriously considering at my next fresh OS install, leaving out SB & SG.

I used to use SpywareGuard in the past, but with Firefox, Proxomitron & a fully patched & locked down IE, I just didn't see the point of using it anymore. I still think it's a good program, but I don't think it's necessary for my needs.

I still use SpywareBlaster though. I like that it's a set it & forget it program that I update every 2 to 4 weeks. SB doesn't take up much space at all. That's good in my book. ;)
