Being very brief....but having been around when ver 1 was being hashed out with most of the above mentioned names plus Becky's....I will have to chew on what all has transpired....and not exclussively from just the Lavasoft camp. IMHO....Lavasoft did hit a bump in the road....ok....they actually went in the ditch....but they are still a Company I have some respect for today.

Fair enough, Bubba, and at the end of the day, hopefully, Lavasoft will be out of that ditch and back on the right side of the road(or the left side, for you wrong way drivers in some parts of this little world of ours.) :D

    Best wishes,
    VV

Been awhile since I've heard that site mentioned, or the old Becky board as well.

Seems like there is always some major issue with Ad Aware every year. Last year it was the repeated release of new builds for the SE version to fix problems with the new Ad Aware SE. I believe there were 4 major release in less than a month. Then before that, Ad Aware 6 took forever to get released and the current version at that time, 5.8 I believe, didn't get any updates for 4 months. When Ad Aware 6 did finally come out, there were problems with it as well.

Why anyone would pay money for this program is beyond me when there are many other quality pay antispyware programs that don't have Lavasoft's negative track record in customer service.

I think they may have ended up in the ditch one time too many...

That was my biggest moan, they always used to and it has been kicked into touch.

I may have picked my words badly, but they are appearing arrogant with it. :(

Gee, such a difference here in how you all look at Lavasoft and how everyone at dslr is seeing this debacle. I'm surprised that some of you here are on Lavasoft's side on this and the fact that you all have not immediately uninstalled AdAware amazes me.

    everyone ? <yawn>

That is a very involved thread at BBR indeed....and some interesting comments are being made....but as it is at BBR with certain members there....this is not a pick a side thing for me or quite a few folks that have garnered my respect. Heck....it ain't even been 48 hours since Eric's first post. Those like yourself who choose to go off the deep end and make a knee jerk decision....do so after making a personal decision....a personal decision that will not be questioned by me that's for sure....but it also does not mean a hill of beans at the end of the day.

    Facts:
1)A well respected member of Wilders and numerous other Forums across the net made a comment concerning what he felt were some puzzling new developments on the anti-spyware front...."Lavasoft has Removed WhenU from its Detections Database"
2)Lavasoft shot back that yes indeed WhenU was removed because it did not score a minimum of 3 points or higher.
3)For anyone interested....Lavasoft has a procedure in place to submit information for those so inclined whereby they can attempt to show that WhenU....or any other program for that matter should be included.

Be amazed Mel....but if you base your amazement souly on what you have read here compared to what you refer to concerning dslr....once again you have read into it wrongly.

There's a lot that went on between 1 and 2 above....much of it worth chewing on....some of it worth nothing more than spitting out. What I'll be watching is what goes on after 2.

I couldn't agree more Bubba ... I like you will give Lavasoft the benefit of doubt, and have my trust continue, which will naturally be a little more guarded. We shall wait and see. ;)

Ps. My original thoughts after #2

Didnt awhile back ago adaware and other programs remove wildtangent? I dont remember a a big thread over that or accusing them companies of helping out wildtangent. As far as them not disclosing it, I dont know. Maybe from now on since this has happened they will inform people better. But I dont think it is a reason to drop adaware and use something different, not just over this one thing.

AdAware has a long history of contempt for its customers. This is just the latest evidence. They abandoned their customers for almost 6 months a couple of years ago when they wanted to concentrate solely on developing their paid for product. They have always deleted posts that in any way, no matter how politely stated, question Lavasoft's actions and attitude. When they do get a decent, good employee who tries to change this attitude what do they do? They fire him.

Perhaps you guys would like to join the distinct minority at Computer Cops in their current poll on AdAware?

    http://castlecops.com/modules.php?name=Surveys&op=results&pollID=29

It saddens me that of the three security sites I most admire the majority of members of this one have chosen to side with a despicable company....that is the few here who even seem at all interested in this subject. Seems to be an amazing lack of interest at this site. I don't understand that either.

I have removed Ad-Aware, but not because i've lost all (but certainly some) confidence in them, it's simply because that it (just like Spybot) haven't found anything in the last 6-12 months, after Spy Sweeper & Giant/MS-Antispyware was added to my software-arsenal.

What i just don't understand, is why Lavasoft did not simply disclose the removal from the database in the first place. Why they would put their costumers in a position of being less protected i don't understand either. :)

    wat has happened to Lavasoft.
It used to be the best antispyware in the world with the extra protection of spybot-search & destroy there was no better protection but now its crap.

I think that lavasoft should join with another antispyware like spy sweeper like that it will be better.

    Ladies and gents,

Permit me to stated a refreshing statement ;)

    - Lavasoft never has been and still isn't able to get ther Public Relations in order. Until Aaron Hulett had been sacked, all changes have been made public; the way it should be. Policy change has resulted in this uproar. That's a very plain recommendation...

One could blame Nick Stark cs. for this - and rightly so. Putting things into perspective, merely a few thousands 'nerds' will notice this. milllons of users never ever will ever notice this - an in the end that's what does count - and as I see it, Lavasoft acts accordingly. Eric did a splendid job as for noticing what happened. I for one am not that sure he is a happy camper with the witch hunt as a result of his findings.

    - One might question the way Lavasoft handles TACs. Questioning them in this regard shouldn't be a problem - contact them. That said: in the end it's up to all security/spyware software vendors to set up a standard; that's the way it works, plain and simple. Lavasoft is no exception to the rule here. Crucifying is quite a different story - I for one will not join the pack - Eric Howes will not do so either as I presume (your welcome to comment, Eric ;) ).

Concluding: major CEO's decisions from Lavasoft have been the wrong ones - period; as far as I'm concerned: the one's mentioned above. I for one don't care where trust in this software is or has been an item - running with the pack has been and always will be the easiest way to go. Not over here it is ;) . Tackle Lavasoft's TACs coming with valid arguements: sounds OK - although the decision is and stays with the vendor - as it is for those using this software.

Make up your mind - as an individual, rather then jumping on an easy band wagon - that's what this is all about. witch hunting for sure isn't - far too easy and disregarding individual intellects.

    regards,

    paul

Please would someone be so kind as to explain these TAC points? I'm guessing its a kind of importancy level. If this is the case, shouldn't all threats be included in the definitions or would this simple result in a file too large for download?

Very well said Paul ;) ~We certainly do, do our own thinking here~ ... one of the many reasons we're a cut above the rest ...
    ..::No Sheep::.. :)
    ...
@Jimbob - Here's a Lavasoft Link that should provide you all the information you need regarding TAC - http://www.lavasoftnews.com/ms/tac_main.shtml

I have made up my mind. I stumbled onto ad-aware and started using it before I had an antivirus or a firewall, if you can imagine that! I haven't used the product now for quite a while, and have no plans on going back. But I am not throwing fuel on the fire (as such). I just clicked the link Steve put out there a couple posts back withing this thread.

I am somewhat amazed by their system. It seems quite a bit more forgiving of many practices than I am.

Issues like this one have a tendancy to make me go in with both guns drawn and shoot first and ask questions later. But strangly enough, I don't find that quality in the people I go to when seeking advice and perspective on issues.

I'm not above using a free version of Ad-aware if I think it will do me some good. Even if companies a, b, and c have paid them off, they could still perform well on d thru z. :D

    Sorry about that cheif!

I'm thinking that AdAware didn't detect all the spyware. Poeple used Spybot and Adaware together. Why can't people still use them together. What one program won't find the other will and with MS AS coming I say take a chance and use all three if you want. :)

    Well Said Paul.

That's an excellent way to put it!

I stopped using it mostly because it was becoming a hassel to use. I will say it did occasionally catch stuff (other than cookies too :) ) that SSD missed. I decided to try Pest Patrol or SpySweeper as a backup instead. I figure if you've used the same program for a long time, occasionally switch to see how they compare. I know Pest Patrol is walking around with two black eyes these days, but I found it to be much more useful than Ad-aware. That was months before what I guess you might call tha Ad-aware 6 month vacation. So (then) there was no angst involved. Someday I may use them again, but their would have to be more than just improved software. If you can't trust your security programs, really, what good are they.

You know what cracks me up? Everytime I do an update or something to Norton Personal Firewall the first few times it access the web it reports it self! They say they are attempting to contact the internet and the recomment asigning it access. It's funny because, of course I give them access they are my firewall! There are reasons other than politeness for the request, obviously but i love it.

Thanks for the thoughtful post. Since I played a large role in touching off this controversy with my testing and several posts at DSLR and in the Lavasoft forum, I'm going to withhold final comment on this issue until Ann Akerlund of Lavasoft posts her anticipated statement.

My pleasure, Eric. You sure did trigger all this, and I for one do respect your point of view as for commenting.

My stand will be one and the same, whatever Ann is coming up with: a major problem as for Public Relations as well as an uncalled for policy change. Does all this imply Lavasoft is untrustworthy? Not in my book. Clumsy staff decions and bad handling results coming from that has been and still is a major defect in the LS organization. All this could have been prevented that easily...

Anyway: please visit us and post your findings/conclusion. It's much appreciated.

    regards,

    paul
