Why can't backup to DVD media?

Wonder why can't I backup to DVD media instead of backing up partitions to CDR and split images it makes it dificult to verify them

DVD media only on UDF? Roxio or InCD? Looks like a joke
Who would in the right mind rely on UDF write?

 

I backup 4GB images to my hdd first and then use Nero 6's "Make UDF DVD" feature and burn them directly to DVD. There's no need to format them first and InCD or DirectCD don't even need to be installed. I use this method with DVD+R and it works perfectly. There's nothing wrong with UDF and it is the preferred format for DVD. In addition, there is no 2GB file size limit as there is with ISO9660.

 

HOW do you get 4GB chunks? I don't get that option --just the 2GB JAZ choice which sucks!

People often confuse UDF with Packet Writing.
You are correct in that there is nothing wrong with UDF, as it is a filesystem successor to ISO9660. Packet Writing, which gives you the ability to drag and drop right to the recordable media, nearly always uses the UDF filesystem. In other words, Packet Writing generally implies UDF, but not vice-versa. I avoid packet writing, and burn my DVDs in the standard method you describe.

Thanks for that info. I guess many people automatically associate UDF with packet-writing (InCD, DirectCD).
I image to an additional internal FAT32 drive and TI automatically creates the 4GB file size which is convenient for burning to a single DVD+R. They more or less serve as a backup to my HDD images, just in case my image drive fails for whatever reason.

I use Accard's Ha burner to burn in udf format even if it is an ugly burner it does a great job
Still I am surprised why TI does not burn direct to DVD and we have toi use a thrid party application?

 

The 4GB size is because you are backing up to a FAT32 drive, and that's the maximum size for FAT32.

A more efficient way to split the files that you will burn to DVD disks is to type in 2240MB as the split size. Two of these splits will just fill a DVD disk with less than 1MB wasted.

I too burn an image to the HDD first, and then use Nero Ultra 6 to burn UFD to DVD+R disk.

I even use 16X with good results. I have however at times had my DVD burn show corrupted, while the original image on the HDD was okay, but that is in another thread.

 

I always create a sfv and md5 checksum files when burning to DVD or CDs
saves hassles or veryf with the built in image checker
