i am not too proficient at firewalls, so i need a good application based firewall, that will allow me to setup some rules. which one is lowest on resources and still effective. doesn't have to be free.
Try Kerio 2.1.5 with BZ's rulesets first. I started out with that and it was a good intro to firewalls. Furthermore, its free! If you really can't be bothered about learning, then I personally think Agnitum Outpost is a good firewall. For me, browsing with Outpost was much smoother than with Kerio 2.1.5. Also, I didn't really have to bother too much about setting up the rules with Outpost. You can install it and start browsing and be relatively sure that you are well protected. Anyway, I am trialing BlackIce now. Quite good as well, except that one doesn't have the control that Kerio or Outpost gives.

Hi, If Pc Internet Patrol is really a good application based firewall, i'm not sure that it should be used with Windows Firewall (suspected to be backdoored). A free and simple firewall like Zone Alarm is a better choice than Windows firewall. Reported on Pc Internet Patrol's site: "Pc internet Patrol is the only system in the world that will protect you even if a hacker is using a completly unknown malicious program...". This affirmative sentence is a little bit pretentious. Application control filtering are more used in Soho/Small Busieness/Corporate environment (authentication of datas between cklient/server). For instance, there is an "all in one solution" (AV, Firewall...) which intented to Soho like Invisus with application control features for the firewall: http://www.invisus.com/products/desktop_firewall.html (MD5 signature verification against spoofing trusted applications by malwares). Some personal firewalls have also this kind of features. But Pc Internet Patrol is a good product with a free firewall (Pc Int. P. is already expensive!) Regards
I don't care much for online installers... which is why i haven't used either PCIP or F-Secure IS [6 month trial from MS]... neither is too lucrative for me. PS: FSIS firewall was rumored to be good too.
