    Hi everybody;

Since not posting from home, I can't reveal my Member ID from this computer... Sorry for that...

Knowing most people on the Net are running on Windows, I'd like to know how many Wilderssecurity members are running on alternative systems, be it Linux, Mac, and other...

Are there members who, like me, are slowly but steadily trying their hands on those systems so as to quit Windows in some near future? If so, why?

Feel free to comment on your choices, expectations, and experiences, or to tell us why you would not dare to make such a move, or why you wouldn't even consider it...

    Thanks

    Well...

Personally, I recently bought a Mandrake Linux box I'm planning to use on my PC. I have to buy a new external modem for that pc, so I first started installing Linux on my laptop, and was pleased with the automatic partitioning procedures it performed.
But I seem to do something wrong during the install procedure, and I have trouble accessing the visual interface. I still have to check out if this might be related to some driver missing, but I haven't had the time to do so yet.

I also saw that some free cd's are available which allow one to run Linux directly from the cd drive, without installing anything on the hard drive... How's that for a spectacular idea ? I like it a lot. Gonna try that as soon as I get home.

Other than that, I recently read an article describing the current and future versions of MacOS, and I must admit I've been impressed by what I saw. I didn't know this system had gotten so good. Anyone with experience in that field? Which are the +'s and -'s?

How would one describe MacOS's technology? More or less secure than Windows? Why?

    Rgds

Win XP, Win 2000, & SuSE 9.2 :D ... I'm actually gonna install Mandrake 10.1 too, I just haven't got around to it yet. ;) Ps. I've just caught the Linux ~Bug~ :p so I'm still feeling my way around ... and haven't decided what distro I like best.

BTW ... Mandrake 10.2 Beta 2 is available if anyone is interested - http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Mandrake_Linux/1002027590/1

Why have one, when you can have many. ;) :p :ninja:

    Hi

I'm on WXP SP1 most of the time, on SP2 the rest of the time, just comparing the systems's behaviors...

Yes, I heard about the Linux cd's, great idea... Maybe people won't be afraid to try it now they don't have to modify or change anything on their HD.

MacOS may still be a little expensive right now. I'd like to know it better too.

BeOS is the one that's most fascinating me, although I don't have any idea what it might look like. Very difficult to use, probably a specialist' affair... But it has the reputation of being the most secure system of all.

I think Linux does encrypt the whole system, so when one starts to use the OS, anything that gets typed or downloaded is gonna be encrypted at the end of the session, so one doesn't have to worry about leaving traces of sensitive credit card information and so on on the HD. I wonder if M$ is gonna use this same principle in the next LongHorn system...

Might be. The admin/vs/limited account privileges applied in NT and XP are in a a-sense also coming from the old Unix-concept of root-user...

    Rgds, Crockett

I run Win2k on my main machine, and XP on the other 2. I ran Win98 for the longest time and admittedly prefer 2k by far. I also prefer 2k by far over the XP systems so far. I have not installed SP2 on either of my XP systems. I also do the upkeep/maintenence/security on 3 systems my folks have (speaking of which I better make another trip soon :p ). Two of their machines (one is a laptop) run XP and the 3rd is a bit of an oldie and runs 98. Coincidentally - that machine on Win98 is a bit of a rarity - it has never been reinstalled - running original install of 98

Anyway I will watch what Longhorn is bringing - and should Windows continue on a trend toward reliance upon MS (after purchase) for consumer use - such as those garbage passport things) I will begin to check out the alternatives. Until then I have enough (fully legit) copies of 2k to keep me happy and independent ;-)

I created a very similar thread when I first arrived, a few months ago, got a lot of feedback. Would dig it out but my searching capability has been removed :doubt:

    What's your favourite operating system?

    Lots of feedback.

Jimbob - I edited your above link pointing it to the thread I believe you intended to point to, as the other one had pointed to the 'Browser of Choice Poll' - snap ;)
