Error during scan

I've noticed this in the logs after a scan. Any ideas what's causing it? See image.

"Error occurred while scanning MBR sector of 2. physical disk"

 

By the way......if NOD32 ever wants to add some bloatware, they can put a spell checker in the logs.

This occurs if you try to scan using a limited account on a NT based OS.
Scan your disk using an administrator account.

 

I'm using admin account with XP Home.

I get a few of the blue files everytime I scan. Most of mine are password protected files that show up in blue. To the best of my knowledge, Nod, or any other antivirus can't scan password protected files. I do get the error4. Nod says that the application is busy, or used by another operating system. I'm not running nt. I run windowsME. Hope this helps.

 

The error4 is common, that's a locked file and not a problem.
The one I'm wondering about is the first blue line.
"Error scanning MBR sector of 2. physical disk"

Speaking about [4] it's not a bad idea to take from time to time a closer look to such files. As long as you have no exe-files locked in the %system32% folder or in the %windir% there is not much to worry about.
If you have several executables locked in the system folder than you should worry about it - could be exclusive lock using malware such as sober for instance.

For this MBR... Do you have some strange operating system installed beside Windows ?

 

I don't mean to add to the fire, but maybe your HD has some bad sectors on it. I only suggest this because I found out mine did. Anytime an AV scanned it, or when I ghosted my system, it would crap out on a specific sector. I downloaded a free sector repair tool and I ended up having a few bad HD Sectors. After I repaired them, the scans/ghosts worked just fine.

If you right-click My Computer and select Properties, then on the Hardware page of the System properties box, click the Device Manager button. Expand the "Disk drives" to see what drives are present. Does that show an additional physical disk which may be a device other then a HDD.

Windows can show some devices like the card readers as hard disk drives. NOD32 then attempts to access those drives and displays the errors you noted.

 

I have it at home (can't remember name), but it is a dos based app that runs off a floppy. Very simple to use. I'll post the name when I get home.

I just searched google for "Free Sector Repair Tool" and it was pretty much the 1st or 2nd link. There are a bunch of free ones out there.

 

Yes........It has a newly installed HP Photosmart 2710 which is connected to the desktop by USB.
It is listed as a USB device in the "disk drives" of device manager.

The error started appearing about the time that was installed.
That could be the culprit.

Bingo! That is what NOD is seeing because Windows shows it in the Device Manager, Disk Drives.

I would just disregard that message, "Error scanning MBR sector of 2. physical disk"

It would probably still show up if you just unplug the device.
You would also need to uninstall that device in Device Manager,
Disk Drives to check.

 

just plug in one of those multi-card readers for photo memory cards - like an 8/9/10 in one reader, and see those errors multiply! I have an 8-in-1 card reader and get 4 of those blue MBR errors every time I scan - same for my home machine and I travel with one too, so again on my laptop...

 

Did a scan tonight and noticed the error was gone. Then I noticed
the HP 2710 was turned off.
Case closed.....
