Norton Protected Recycle Bin

"To remove the Norton Protected Recycle Bin
Right-click the Recycle Bin icon, and click Properties.
Click the Global tab.
Click "Use one setting for all drives."
Click the Recycle Bin tab.
Click "Standard Recycle Bin."
Change the text in the Title box to "Recycle Bin."
Click the Norton Protection tab.
Select a drive, and then uncheck Enable Protection. Repeat for each drive.
Click Empty Protected Files.
Click OK twice.
Restart the computer.
Norton Protection has been removed from your system. "

There is a problem though in my case: after I click "Use one setting for all drives" on the Global tab, THERE IS NO " RECYCLE BIN" TAB, and also no Standard Recycle bin, etc. etc. Could anyone explain this?
I would like to get rid of the NPRB inorder to free space on the hard drive, but I can't!

Have you tried to "Right Click" the Recycle Bin, and delete both the Norton Protected Files, and the Recycle Bin. The Norton Protected Files, will remain on your system for 7 days default, before they are deleted, unless you purge them manually.

Extremely intelligent of you to present this pictorially! MY WINDOW WHICH APPEARS AFTER RIGHT CLICKING ON THE RECYCLE BIN DOESN'T HAVE ALL THESE TABS IN THE UPPER PART, WHER YOU HAVE POINTYED THE ARROW!!! THERE ARE SIMPLY NOT THERE!!!
How could I replace the window I have with the one you displaye in your posting??
Otherwise, I empty the recycle bin several times daily, that would presume Norton Prorected should be emptied too, but they aren't, as no disk space is freed. This Norton aspect is important, I know personally someone who freed almost 2 Gb on his hrddrive by getting rid of the Norton recycler!

 

Do you get what's in the second ScreenShot (above; Post #3) , if you right click on the recycle bin?

If you do ... select "Empty Norton Protected Files", and it will purge them.

Other than that ... something must have got a little jumbled up. Have you tried uninstalling System Works, rebooting, and re-installing System Works?

Just as added info, when you delete the files in the recycle bin, it does not delete the Norton Protected Files. They are essential a recycle bin for the recycle bin. The default config. is that they will remain for 7 days, you can change that once ... you have those tabs available to you, under the Norton Protected tab.

Hmmm ... I just had a thought, are you running on a limited or admin windows account. If it's a limited account, maybe you can't access those settings, from that type of account? If you are on a limited account could you try an access the properties, from an admin account.

1. Answer to screen shot from post # 3: no, I don't.If I had " Empty Norton Protected Files", we wouldn't be shoving postings back and forth now...
2. I am a bit reticent to meddle with System Works...How is that done, anyway?...Otherwise, it is as clear as daylight that this is a software problem, something was either not installed from the very beginning or went wrong with this Recycle Bin.
3. To the degree of my knowledge, I have a perfectly normal Windows 2000 Pro account! What would some other characteritics of a "limited account" be?

Well, the only thing remaining other than uninstall/reinstall, is to try "Norton WinDoctor" (System Works - Utilities) ... which may find some issues, and correct them. If you've already tried this, then , it looks like you have no other choice, but to uninstall System Works, reboot, and re-install the suite again - Uninstall using the add/remove programs in the control panel, and use a registry cleaner if you wish, such as RegSeeker - http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm - to clean up any left over bits, then reboot, and then reinstall.

An uninstall/reinstall is your best bet, and will/should resolve the issue.

I'll search the Symantec KB, for any info regarding; how, why, what, etc.. If I find anything relevant I'll post a link.

Sorry I missed answering this question earlier.

With Windows 2000, There are few basic user groups:

Standard Uesr / Power Users: Can Modify the computer, add/remove programs, but are limited to reading only their files, and not those of other users.

Restricted User: Can operate the computer, save files, etc. but can not make possibly damaging changes to the computer, etc.

Admin Users: Have complete unrestricted access to the computer/domain.

Sorry for being silent, the Internet connections were down for quite some time due to a really ferocious snowstorm. Thank you all for invovement and participation!
The situation is getting worse bordering on desperate: a simplest arithmetical approach reveals that after removals, erasions, deletions, switches to the other drive ,etc.,the currently installed things on the drive are NOT more than 1 GB. SO WHERE IS THE OTHER 1GB/ this drive has 2 gb/. Somehow, practically half of the drive is declared full, while it should be free!!!The only explanation is there is something hidden there. Unfortunately, as you know, I can't locate the Norton recycler, and a Yahoo Desktop Search tells me there isn't such a thing on my PC. There is no Norton WinDoctor in Systems/Utilities either. This WinDoctor is available for downloading only at very suspicious-looking sites, and I am not very enthusiatic about downloading it from there, where could I find a more reliable source.
Other more specific answers:
1.In Steve's opinion"An uninstall/reinstall is your best bet, and will/should resolve the issue", I really like the " should" here...It seems wiser to try and exhaust every previous possibility and only then proceed with reinstall/uninstall that might not be successful too...
2. I guess I am standard user/power user of Windows 2000, this PC was brought to me already programmed and installed etc.
3. I checked very meticulously, there is no "Pro" after the digits, so it is sipmly Norton 2002.
4. Yes I was not sure it would go with my version but decided to give it a try.The product was simply not available for 2002.
So there we go. By the way, I find it scandalous that there seems to be not a single public EMail address for Norton, one should be able to ask them about this!!! The so-called " on line support" is a garbled waste of time, sorry if I sound radical!

 

The "other" 1 GB is in the Norton Protected Files bin ... Which by some error with the product, you can not see. The default setting for the Protected Files to purge themselves is 7 days. With that said, Should you not try to uninstall/reinstall System Works ... they should be purged from the system 7 days after intial deletion. At which time you should regain that free space. Although this in no way corrects the corruption of System Works, that seems to have happen. I don't think there is any other recourse but to try the uninstall/reinstall, if you don't have a product CD, as you said this was installed when you recieved the PC, then I would just uninstall it, as you would be better off without it, rather than a corrupted program that doesn't function correctly.

To try what is mentioned regarding the "uninstall/reinstall" is a normal course of action. I really don't think there is any other option. I guess this ends my effort to help, because you seem to be searching for a solution, I don't think exists. I do wish you luck with your quest.

Absolutely logical! I think what is happenning is that for some reason: a/ The NPRB is deeply hidden, and b/ it doesn't purge itself every 7 days as it should, so gradually the mess occuoied half of the disk!
I am inclined to uninstall Norton, but first please confirm: WILL THIS SOLVE THE PROBLEM? What is the guarnatte the full recycle bin will not remain behind? Otherwise, plenty of other AVs are available, I am thinking of Nod32 or Panada for instance.
Additional question: I am starting to recive prompts to move the index files to another disk as there is no space on this one. How is that done?

 

It should correct the problem, but there is no guarantee, as is the same with everything in life. If Norton is responsible for occuping this space with protected files, it should relinquish that space, once uninstalled. Things happen, it is possible for any program to corrupt ... I'd stay the course with Norton, it is a good AV, it maybe a little more resource hungry than other AV's, but it does provide great protection. Once the subscription ends, try another AV ... Nod & KAV are both highly regarded ... trial them out, and see which one you like, if you decide not to stay with Norton.

p.s. I totally agree about Norton, it has caught every intruder till now, perhaps for the price of being a bit too greedy...

To Dog: Well, a C:\ drive which is practically unusable, and the notorious "Error 1500- there is another installation running" of Microsoft/ which prevents me from getting rid of unused progarms and applications, like Tiny Firewall, for instance/ could be considered a serious enough reason?

Norton SystemWorks 2005 / Windows XP Pro

Settings:

Norton Protection tab
C: drive has Enable Protection unchecked.

Recycle Bin tab
Standard Recycle Bin radio button selected in
Double-clicking Item Opens.

Problem: Cannot purge C drive protected files

In Norton Protection tab, I click Empty Protected Files button.
It says, "There are 1,500 protected files total on drive C."
I click purge.
I click Empty Protected Files button again and see same 1,500 protected files message.
I reboot system.
I still get 1,500 protected files message.
So how do I get rid of 1,500 protected files?
