:) Because I care: I notice in your avatar there is a cigarette dangling from your lips. I hope that you do not partake in the habit, and if you do that you seriously consider stooping. I am sure your medical provider has told you about the dangers. We just lost Johny Carson due to smoke related illness.

I was a heavy smoker (two and a half packs a day) for over forty years. I quit almost ten years ago now. It was one of my better decisions. I wont lie, the first few days, I would have smoked the exhaust form an automobile or truck, however after that it became easier. Jolly rancher fire candy helped greatly during this period.

    Thanks

Paul: Really do try and quit. I am sure I am not alone when I say that we want to see you around here for many a more year. I know that I do not want to hear that you are layed up with some smoke related decease down the line.

    Thanks

I share that love of Jolly Rancher candies, especially the Cinnamon Fire flavour. Be aware that if you chew on them (slightly, w/o conscious awareness) as they get smaller in your mouth, you may eventually break a molar, as I did.

I'm not insensitive to Paul's smoking or the concern about his well-being. However, as someone who also still smokes, I understand that there isn't much to be said about it.

Smoking is no good, don't harm your own health and the health of other people.
I'm saying this to all smokers: DO NOT smoke. Read:

Read this (from The Boys' Brigade in Singapore):

Smoking, alcohol and drug abuse are harmful to your health. It can also lead to dire problems. Remember, being a real man is about living and enjoying life without resorting to these substances. Do not be afraid to resist the temptation to smoke, consume alcohol or consume drugs. You do not need to experiment. People respect those who stand up for their beliefs.

  13. I did actually post a message saying this, however it was never accepted and now that I'm banned. I will say it again. Listen guys, Paul is old enough and possible wise enough to make his own decission regarding his health. If he chooses to continue smoking, he will be the one who will suffer.

Actually, you haven't been banned though you are still on Post Watch. Appropriate posts will still be approved. Inapporpriate ones will not. Same as ever.

If you do leave, then decide to leave altogether and don't come back as a guest trying to bypass the rules. You run a forum, you know that is not right.

Can anyone really know how another person's decisions will or won't affect them? I don't think so...

  16. I also know that I would never place someone on post watch indefinitely due to reasons which to be honest take the buscuit when I can be helping poeple a lot easier without it. Secondly, I'm guessting I am due to the fact I do not have permission to send private messages any more.

Back to the Smoking thingie. Some find it easier said then done. I have the same problem and yes I am suffering because of the habit but heres the flip side. Have a lung problem Asthma. Suffered a Heart Attack in Sept 2004. Did smoking add to the problem sure it did. Can I stop good question as all things out there to aid in stopping have been tried by me and my doctors. When smoking is brought about stress related things in your life it is harder to stop. The alt. was pills to ease the stress but they have side affects to such as being sleepy or feeling druged out all the time.

Advice of doctors was cut back as much as possible, Only smoke in certain areas, try to control the stress, when want a smoke get a lollipop, smoke a good brand of cigerette not something cheap, keep busy.

Can a person stop sure they can. But it takes a lot of well power and a lot of support from family and friends.

So if you want to help Paul stop 1st they have to want to stop. Then support him as best you can. Make your statements positive not negitive. He knows the danger of smoking as we all do.We don.t know what is going on in a persons life that causes them to smoke so like I said just be positive.

    Best.

    Grand Dad

My grandfather smokes. Had triple heart bypass, now he can have no operations for other problems as half of his heart is dead and the drug used to place him to sleep would mean he might not wake up.

Each of us goes to sleep every night with no guarantee we'll wake up. I've just realized you were born in 1989, so you may not be fully in touch with that concept yet.

I'm sorry your grandfather is sick. You and he are both luckier than a lot of people are because you had the opportunity to get to know each other. Enjoy him while you can. Nothing lasts forever, dear!

Terryala's comments make a lot of sense.

A concept I understand a little. I was in a head on car crash when I was 11 years old. My mum injured her back and currently seems to have some sort of problem with her spine. I on the other hand got away with just fracturing most of my fingers and smashing me knees through the dash borad. The day I began believing in angels :)

That just goes to show you how addicting smoking and the nicotene really is.

Some people just can't seem to stop, even with major health problems already
    in progress. It's so sad.

And you know...some just quit with a snap of their fingers, while others
    struggle and struggle.
I'm not too sure anymore if it's something about willpower, or what.

I had and still have the willpower to give it up.
But even on "Zyban" and patches, I still puff away like a chimney.

If I had only known better when I was younger...................:doubt:

I think it might be about NOT WANTING them. Then no willpower is required. I used to drink too much. I got cirrhosis. I recognized I had a problem some months after I was diagnosed ('87) and it slowed me down, but I still went through a few more periods of trouble. I had to push the envelope, I guess. About 10 years ago, I stopped wanting the taste. I still don't know what changed inside of me, but it was nothing anybody else said.

    Amen to that!

:) I think we can all agree that smoking is a habit. A habit is learned, and what is learned can be forgotten. It is the addiction that is the hard part, and for that there is no simple answer, but like all addictions, they also can be overcome. To say this is an easy task would be a complete lie. To say the benefits form quiting are well known and documented, is just a plain fact. Whomever said that one must want to quit is absolutely correct. Agree we must provide all the support and encouragement we can for any individual attempting to accomplish this.

    Thanks
