Configuration Questions

I read through the "Basic Configuration" thread to me help set up TDS-3. So far, so good.

In doing a full scan, TDS-3 looks through every folder and file in C:, for example. As a practical matter, is it necessary to scan "Favourites", "My Documents", or "Program Files" ? That is, are these likely locations for trojans and worms ? If the answer is "Yes"or "Sometimes", then I guess that I shouldn't exclude them.

Just trying to speed things up, but I don't want to do something that negates the security potential of TDS-3.

In answer to your question, IMHO, the simple answer is YES.

I mean, it does not take that long for the extra scans, and maybe when you get more confident/knowledgeable about TDS, you can skip some part.

If, for example, you have a folder full of MP3's, or a folder full of clipart in the hundreds, and do not add any more, then certainly, you may if you like skip that once it has had an initial scan done at least twice to check them out before skipping future scans.

As for me, I have had TDS for around 2 years now, and I simply put it on full system scan [everything] about once every 5 days, just before going to bed.

I would advice to let TDS-3 scan them all.
As Tassie_Devils and LWM also wrote, why not let TDS-3 scan them all and do some other things in the meanwhile.

Thanks for the prompt and full replies, including the link to the earlier thread ( I should have looked for it ).

I had been running the full scan every day when I turned on and when I shut down for the last time. I also have Panda Platinum v6.25.02 running in the system tray along with TDS-3.

It sounds as if I'm a bit too paranoid with TDS-3 but I won't exclude any directories in the future.

it's certainly not paranoid to have more scans and more programs running, like the Panda, NOD32, KAV, which gets possible viruses as well, doesn't it, while TDS and WormGuard concentrate on trojans and worms, scripts and other nasties, even from websites wanting to enter and harm.
Wayne wrote in another thread here about two more TDS programs in near future as an extra necessary part of our security outfit like a resident part and another kind of scanner, no further details described yet.

Experience learns this time of the year is about the most attractive for the nasties writers so i would not exclude a single bit from my system and scan more frequently.
I put on the full scan when i go doing something else, shopping, sleeping, cooking, and even when i'm around if i think there is a reason (closing as many unneeded other programs as possible that time).

At times i go through diskettes and would advice other storage mediums as well. Simply because so many more references are added each time which might discover code patterns which were not known several weeks or months before.
In the favorites even URLs and the icons can contain code, not sure if trojans can infect those afterwards, but everything possible could be thinkable.
But Wayne says, if it can run, it can be caught.
