NAV's out - any advice on my short list of potential AV's...

Hey everyone,

I've spent the last 3-4 days trying to absorb all I can to make an educated decision on a replacement AV product for NAV2003. I think I have narrowed down my choices to NOD32, KAV Personal, or maybe McAfee (mainly the first two). At this point I am really curious about renewal/update costs and can't seem to find this information on KAV's website. It appears NOD32 is $40 plus $23 annually for renewals. Many of you seem to be in both camps and I am having a little trouble making a decision here. I am really in need of something to do the job well with little fiddling required by me (a sentiment for any/all security software) so the wife can surf the interenet without my assistance and yet I am still protected behind the scenes. I have installed the trial version of NOD32 at home and so far I like the interface and the auto updating is great...

Also, will I need tips to uninstall NAV? I've read some stuff that makes me a little nervous about that..!

All are excellent AV's, but NOD and Kaspersky may be the easiest to setup and use. Trial both of them and see which one you and your wife like the best. But make sure you have removed all of NAV before installing any new AV's, particularly KAV. Good Luck ( particularly in uninstalling NAV).

KAV is simplicity itself, you can even password lock it so that settings can't be changed by anyone except you.

There are a few threads about that on here. You can also get uninstallers from Symantec website.

KAV gets my vote but why not try a trial first and see which you prefer Nod or Kav. I don't think Mcafee fits your needs very well.

Just to make sure you are well informed NOD32 also can be password protected. I am not sure if KAV does it but with NOD32 you can setup to email you when a virus was detected so that even if your wife was surfing and ran into a virus you would see the alert in your email. But making the decision for Anti Virus is very personal and you will always see a good debate for either side. I agree with Ianb to trial them and see how it goes.

I tried Kav 5.0, it slowed my 2.4ghz P4 with 1ghz ram down considerably. It left hidden data streams when uninstalled. It seems to work fine for a lot of people. If you multitask or play games, or your PC is not very fast I would recommend NOD, BoClean and common sense.

 

I'm really leaning towards NOD32 right now as KAV is just a bit steep pricewise IMHO...and I do a fair bit of pc gaming so I really like the sound of NOD's low system resource use...thanks all for the input.

 

I would recommend NOD32 just because it detecting and spywares now. It wont slow down you system and it has many options to suit your needs! Great support and best heuristic are just some of its advantages.

KAV is good AV as well but it still slown down computers!

Go with NOD32 and keep BitDefenderFREE as back-up scanner!

 

Update

Well, I was able to use "add/remove programs" to uninstall Norton and its related programs with no problem last night. Then used RegSupreme to go in and remove startups, and registry entries remaining. NOD32 is up and running and properly setup. I'm happy to report it's running nicely along with Ewido, Spybot S&D, SPF Pro, SpywareBlaster and SpywareGaurd.

 

I think you made a good choice with Ewido and Nod32. I hope they serve you well. Let us know what you think after a few days if you don't care.

I recently switched from Norton to NOD32. NOD and KAV are probably 2 of the
best AVs on the market, my vote goes to NOD32.
Be sure and use Blackspear's extra settings found in the sticky post at the top of the
NOD forum.
Great support in the forum is another reason to go with NOD.

 

I recently bought extendia's security suite which includes extendia AVpro with both the KAV and RAV engines......I show 165mb of mem use at startup now, with norton I showed 230+, now that I've got everything running, It's the best out there....I'm currently running SPYBOT,ADAWARE,SPYWAREBLASTER,MICRSFT ANTI SPY, and extendia security suite(39.99 for all kinds of goodies) and they all work excellent together, but you must have a fairly fast machine with good RAM , and for the games out there, you should disable your AV while gaming.

Yea, isn't it amazing how easy it is for some and so difficult for others like it was for me. But I was successful eventually.

I tell you if NOD would just run a "sale" discount for new users and first year of updates. They would likely hook me for full price renewals. Just me, I guess.

I think KAV5 personal would be good for you as it offers nice features at decent price along with good heuristics (I'd say second best) and the world's best unpacker/virus detector engine. Its pretty light on the system too.

Or maybe you can consider MicroWorld's eScan AV edition which only has an Antivirus and email scanner and uses KAV engine while costing just USD 25
AT USD 45.95 you can have eScan Virus Control edition which provides you with firewall and web scanning features too.
