Router amd Firewall Problem

I have a Netgear Wireless Router / ADSL Modem (DG834G) with built in firewall, and from that I have one computer connected by ethernet and a second by the wireless connection. The PC connected with the wireless connection is using a Netgear Wireless USB 2.0 Adapter (WG111).

If I use most decent software firewalls on the PC using the wireless adapter, I cannot connect the the internet. When I used Zone Alarm Pro, my computer had problems assigning a new IP address to my computer each time I connected and I had to shut down Zone Alarm Pro. And when I used Norton Internet Security 2004, I couldn't connect but I couldn't tell why.

Can any one advise me?

By the way, I would like to have a software firewall as well if possible.

I'm not sure I understand when you say that

You did mean that the router was assigning the IP address, correct? In other words, the router is acting as a classical DHCP server and IP addresses for the LAN side PC's are in a typical private range (i.e. 192.168.###.###). Is this how you have it configured?

That seems to be the case and my software firewall appears to dislike this.

Hi Jimbob, You probably need to create a rule in your firewall for "Network Mask" Such as:
Address Type: Network Mask
Network address: such as 192.168.1.100 This should be the IP address given to the particular PC or device on your network ie. the one you are writing the rule for.
Network Address: 192.168.1.0
Network mask: 255.255.255.0

Exactly what do you trusted and internet zones look like? Which IP addresses/ranges are listed there? What is listed as the gateway within ZA? Is the network adapter set to be connected to a DHCP server?

I've uninstalled the software firewall for now as i couldn't connect to the internet with them running. I did tell the 2 different firewalls that the network could be trusted.

maybe its just hype... give it a trial, its a decent security suite (B+ at least, and if bought... REALLY cheap)

 

I do like Zone Alarm Pro a lot, its a nice firewall but I need to be able to connect to the internet.

Came across this site a while ago when I was searching the sygate forums for a configuration for my firewall.

I dont use zone alarm and the site refers to older versions of za but it may help you out. The configurations listed are for both cable modem and adsl connections.

One other thing, I haven't gone back far enough to see all the details of what you are running, but I noticed issues creeping up when I transitioned to XP SP2. With one router (Netgear HA102), I couldn't get the Wireless Zero is successfully hold a connection and had to revert to the native Netgear driver (even there I had a few issues). I finally tossed the whole setup and switched to a Linksys WRT54GS for my wireless branch. During this ordeal I noticed a lot of folks having similar issues.

Make sure you wireless drivers are up to date and try the two approaches - native driver vs. WZC. When you try to use WZC, I found that uninstalling the native driver did make a difference in my case. Anyway, just a thought.

Why would you use a software firewall when your router already has one built in?

As far as a hacker can see is to the router and thats it..right?

 

Is DSL considered a router? I am not sure what it means. I am thinking of getting DSL and I thought the tech mentioned a router that QWest would provide for it. I would hate to have it interfere with the firewall.

Also I will have XP Home sp2, and if that has a firewall will it conflict with other firewalls such as LnS or Kerio? Obviously I am not very competent in the area of computers and security so I am needing some help in configuring my new computer which came in today. It is a Dell 4700, and I am going to start fresh with firewalls and AV. I have been using NAV and Kerio.

My current thoughts are to use Bit Defender as the AV, and either LnS or Kerio 2.1.5 as the firewall.

Appreciate any advice and help you can provide.
