I honestly don't know what all of those people (both young and old) do on their smartphone all of the time? I mean I'm guessing that the most used apps are Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Instagram and Whatsapp. And I'm guessing that young kids also play videogames. But haven't these folks got other stuff to do?

I read news via Feedly, Telegram. But the worst thing are short videos on FB and Youtube. You think, it is just 30 secs, but multiplied by a thousand. And do not get me started on cat pictures. Still, when it is nice outside, I grab a book.

Wow those numbers. I reach for mine less than 10 times a day and that is usually to see what time it is or to check the weather. You'd think that 324 times a day mentioned would actually just be once, non-stop all day long.

Nah. Older brothers of my collegues from primary school were a generation of heavy sms text message users on dumbphones in my country during their teenage years. Just like US dollar has smallest unit (penny), in my country at that time, there were extra popular cellular pre-paid plan that charged 1 smallest currency unit per 1 sms. Ot allowed 10 000 messages a month. Some of them hit the limit per month... which actually means ~ 333 messages a day.
Their were constantlt using phones but it doesn't mean they spend that much time on it. It really taken 5 to 10 second to read and respond at their pace.

To clarify, I also have a lot screen time, but mostly behind my laptop and TV, I find smartphones unhandy to use. My laptop is mostly used for reading news, doing research and stock trading. My TV is mostly used for watching movies and series.

But I don't understand why people are on social media all day long? Unless you're a content creator of course. I personally use Instagram and TikTok for about 20 minutes a day (mostly looking at beautiful women), but I got more important stuff to do. If you spend hours on social media then I call this a waste of time. That's why I think it should be banned for young kids, because it's not healthy.

It is interactive news. If you read paper news, you will finish with the last page, but online, it is a never-ending story. I sometimes find myself scrolling for hours. I even pick up a phone when watching a boring movie or TV show.
Yes, it has been proven, that it causes brain rot, kids become emotionless and detached from the reality, they even have hard time speaking fluently. Smartphone is an useful tool, but a bad friend and even worse toy.
