Microsoft will end support for its Windows 10 operating system this October officially. While users may extend support for a year by paying Microsoft, or longer, if they resort to hacks, many need to make a critical decision this year regarding the future of their PC.

Microsoft published a checklist for those users. The Windows 10 end of support checklist helps customers be prepared when end of support comes, according to Microsoft. Problem is, Microsoft's main intent makes the checklist less usable than it could be. It is basically a reiteration of the end of support email that Microsoft sent out last month.

Yesterday Microsoft released a preview update for Windows 10. Although I don’t recommend installing preview updates, this one is notable as it finally has the fix for the “Event Viewer displays an error for System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker service” bug introduced months ago. KB5055612 finally fixes the issue. While you could have “fixed” it by disabling the service, I always prefer to have Microsoft fix what it broke.

Microsoft is set to shelve Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, when it reaches its end of its support date. The company had announced in January that it would discontinue Microsoft 365 apps for the legacy operating system.

This meant that users who are subscribed to Microsoft 365 would not be able to access Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, OneNote etc., on Windows 10. After feedback from users, Microsoft seems to have reconsidered its plans to retire the apps for Windows 10.

Microsoft extends security updates for Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 by Agencies Ghacks

Microsoft is working on integrating a migration tool into the Windows Backup application. The Backup app was launched back in 2023 as a way for users to back up some data to OneDrive, Microsoft's cloud storage solution.Unlike traditional backup systems, which give users options to back up files, folders, or entire drives, Microsoft's solution focused on very specific locations only.

Windows users can use it to back up certain folders, Documents, Videos, or Pictures, as well as credentials, settings, and some apps. In other words, it is not a full-blown backup solution, as lots of data may be left behind.

Now comes the migration tool, baked directly into the backup application. It is rolling out to test builds currently. First spotted by Windows-detective Phantom of Earth, the new transfer option migrates data from one PC to another.

I value my data at more than 30 dollars/year. At least 35. Those are rookie numbers, you have to pump those numbers up.

A Windows-to-Linux “translation” tool for the 200M+ Windows 10 computers not eligible to upgrade to Windows 11, Operese transfers files, settings, and programs from Windows to a brand-new Kubuntu installation. It's still very much a work in progress, but in my biased opinion, it already doesn't look too shabby!

If you didn't get the chance to watch the whole video, please be aware that I plan on open-sourcing the code in a few months at the latest, but am not yet ready to do so for personal reasons. I also have no intention right now of switching the base to a distro other than Kubuntu, but based on the overwhelming community feedback, I will be making the internals more distro-agnostic so that this can be a long-term goal.
