So my announcements about the Github 2019 runner which we need for a windows 7 compatible Sandboxie Driver build, did not seam to trigger any meaningful reaction. Soooo I wonder can we drop Windows 7 support with the next build? According to the updater stats its about 1,2% of Sandboxie users that still use windows 7 And making CI builds work with a 2025 runner seams right now quite resource intensive.
Well is 1,2% much or little and that people seam no longer loudly asking for win 7 support may only mean that the users of this forum by now have given up and migrated to 10/11 Firefox has 7 support in the 115 build until August 2025 but they wrote then they will finally decide if extend it once more or drop it, so may be august or may be longer. I just don't want to disappoint people, everybody knew windows 7 will end at some point but the question is if this is that point where its will be painless to drop it.
David just make the decision that it seems you are being directed into. You have always tried your hardest to support OS's to the bitter end, if it is going to be too difficult and not secure for users I don't think you have much choice but to do what loads of other software companies have done. Cut the cord.
Does dropping the Win7-support mean, that that currently used version of Sandboxie-Plus will stop it's function (for example, because a certificate will run out of a deadend date)? Or can the Win7-Users still use the last supported version, and only get no further updates? For me, i have a dual boot system, which boots normally into Win10, but for some things i need to boot into Win7, and here i trust into the protection of Sandboxie-Plus.
Im using Trellix self managed EDR. When properly configured, it's the best security software i've ever used. Especially ATP(sandbox) component of it is amazing. Took me several days for testing and conf for my own liking, but im really impressed. Latest av-test.org EDR test shows that, especially for performance side, Trellix is one of the fastest in terms of performance. The latest version does have a feature, where you can run it with MD or without it. I've been testing it about two weeks against many bazaar samples, nothing gets thru. Like i said, it needs to be configured properly, because baseline protections are not enabled.
The old version should remain functional indefinitely, MS is not changing anything on win 7 and Firefox is only offering an ESR with security fixes.
for as long as people say they're using windows 7 you should keep supporting it however if it becomes too difficult to keep it compatible, then yeah, you'll have to 86 support for win7
