Hard to imagine Microsoft doing such a thing. After all, they do make it easy to remove their Edge browser. I just don't believe they would do anything inappropriate.
Not that I'm a huge fan of MS and their design choices, but really they didn't have to support an open format at all. Office could've been using a proprietary binary format that no one could parse, and really who could fault them (other than for not being nice). Many corporate products use proprietary. I've been using LO for over a year now and haven't gone back to MS (never having used 365, I was still using 2013!) but this sounds more to me like LibreOffice is using it as an opportunity to attract some attention (good for them, though a little whiny).
MS can change whatever they want to do with their formats. nevertheless libreoffice has fundamental problems (from 2023) https://blog.documentfoundation.org/blog/2023/08/21/libreoffice-7-6-community/ new versioning does not change or hide the basic issues - the ancient code base. so its simple that competitors can pass by with ease. further i dont see the OD files getting a standard format. for me, LO is one of my first actions to uninstall from any pre-installed for linux here. and get replaced with softmaker office which is much more compatible to my MSO files - this was the most concerning reason when i started in 2008 with SO.
Not really. Microsoft has a market position close to a monopoly stemming from the ancient WIntel duopoly when MS-DOS and Windows were pre-installed on practically every PC. If MS is misusing this monopolistic position to deliberately impede competitors this is highly problematic from an anti-trust legislation perspective and certainly not helpful to achieving a healthy diversified IT eco-system. I don't know what they call "entirely new features" but since then LO has received a lot of great improvements. It's a very solid product, IMO. For me, LO is one of my first actions to install on a Linux distro. I've been using it for many years and it has served me very well.
Maybe, maybe not. Libreoffice has been pretty bad throughout its history with Office files. Softmaker Office/Ashamopo Office and OnlyOffice have had much better compatibility.
thats what i wrote - LibO is maxed out. and the release notes describe this very well https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/25.2 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleaseNotes/24.8 aso. i dont have doubt that LibO serves you and others so well. what else? version 7 is discontinued since 2023. is Softmaker Office with another title tag. i think you ment this. "Onyloffice" is under russian rules, i think this not recommended these days. another i know is WPS and Kingsoft Office, last was/is able to use VBS like Excel (need install). for my needs i use softmaker (paid), and for business i am able to use MS office which has special purpose in Excel, not Word or Outlook. softmaker planmaker has issues using excel table files.
So many thing wrong with that. OnlyOffice is not Russian, it's Latvian. It is not under advisory and users have never been warned against using it for personal use. Ascensio System SIA is Russian, but not OnlyOffice. Ashampoo is SoftOffice, just without the German dictionaries or AI features. Other than that, they are the same. SoftMaker licenses to Ashampoo. WPS Office is Kingsoft. They are both Chinese, and users have been warned against using it, like Kaspersky in the U.S. Just because no don't like OnlyOffice doesn't mean you can make **** up. Get your facts right.
Then I misunderstood, sorry. SoftMaker Office is good, I like its attractive, minimalist interface, much better than the clumsy interface of LibreOffice. But it´s not free, and, if not purchased at a discount, is more expensive that an Office license bought online from a "third-party" seller.
Well, there is a free version called freeoffice. But you're better off going with Ashampoo Office. It has more features and can be had for a lot cheaper with a coupon. Again, it's almost the same thing as Softmaker office
wikipedia told me, that ascensio was a russion sub. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnlyOffice and so i am not sure about now. moving from latvia to singapore. could be shady, or not. but is it me? just installed Onlyoffice, all common features present, but i miss a more detailed settings pane as other office suits offer.
