I've written a long, detailed article debating the architectural software choices in the Linux distro world and their implication for the future of the Linux desktop, including Canonical's deprecation of Unity and selection of Gnome 3, paradox of technical superiority and defeat of Canonical's solutions over the decades, Google business model and ill-fated ongoing trend and attempt to turn the Linux desktop into a copy of Chromebook, community store model and severe problems with availability and reliability of software in the Linux stores - Snap Store and Flathub, lack of product understanding, Valve Steam example of success and product completeness, Steam focus on backward compatibility and game support, SteamOS details, recent changes in the X11 session support in Ubuntu flavors and dire implications thereof, reduced freedom and choice in the Linux space, possibility of Ubuntu running a Plasma desktop session, some other observations, and more. Have fun. https://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/linux-alternate-reality-ubuntu-with-plasma.html Cheers, Mrk
Thank you for the comprehensive article and for the challenging question: What if Canonical selected Plasma for its desktop? Thank you for the Plasma 6.4 Wayland vs X11 articles as well. One question about X11 support: acheron's post that says plasma-session-x11 can be installed in Kubuntu 25.10 is clear. However, in Nate's article "About Plasma’s X11 session," I can't seem to find the part that says KDE has committed to supporting X11 until Plasma 7. Where in Nate's article did you find that? Thanks very much.
I can't say for sure if I saw it in Nate's blog, but there's this: https://mail.kde.org/pipermail/plasma-devel/2025-March/123654.html Mrk
Yes, expected, not the same as committed to, sadly. And I noticed that post was from March 11. Who knows what they'll say in a couple of weeks or months?
