March 10, 2025: Elon Musk claims ‘massive cyber-attack’ caused X outages

Elon Musk claimed on Monday afternoon that X was targeted in a “massive cyber-attack” that resulted in the intermittent service outages that had brought down his social network throughout the day. The platform, formerly known as Twitter, had been unresponsive for many users as posts failed to load.
“We get attacked every day, but this was done with a lot of resources,” the platform’s CEO posted. “Either a large, coordinated group and/or a country is involved.”

Discord’s mobile app will have video ads starting in June, the company announced today. The initial pilot for the video ads, which Discord calls Video Quests on Mobile, will offer advertisers the ability to “showcase trailers, make impactful announcements, and highlight premium content” to users, Discord said.

Facebook and Instagram owner Meta is considering a paid subscription in the UK which would remove adverts from its platforms.
Under the plans, people using the social media sites could be asked to pay for an ad-free experience if they do not want their data to be tracked.
It comes as the company agreed to stop targeting ads at a British woman last week following a protracted legal battle.

... more people will find AI bots to talk to, whenever they like, which, in some ways, seems kind of lonely, right? Chatting to non-human entities, and even befriending them, also seems like it could have unintended psychological impacts down the line.

But no matter, Meta’s pushing ahead, and we’ll deal with the consequences after the “innovation” has occurred.

Indeed, late last year, a Meta representative outlined the company’s plan to bring millions of AI characters into its apps, complete with profiles, bios, etc. These characters will post, comment, and engage like real people on Facebook and IG, and many users will likely be unaware that these are not actually real people.... we’ve learned similar lessons the hard way with social media, with the platforms rushing to maximize engagement at all costs, which has now led to concerns around mental health impacts, and the influence, particularly on younger users, of algorithmically-defined content feeds.

Meta to face intense government scrutiny this week

Mr. Zuckerberg will again take the hot seat, this time as the marquee witness in the Federal Trade Commission’s landmark lawsuit accusing Meta of breaking antitrust law. Regulators sued the company in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia over its acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp, saying it used a “buy-or-bury strategy” to maintain a monopoly in social media.

F.T.C. lawyers plan to grill Mr. Zuckerberg for hours. They also have a trove of his emails and other communications and plan to ask him to defend the documents that they say prove his company’s ill intentions.

OpenAI is working on its own X-like social network...While the project is still in early stages, we’re told there’s an internal prototype focused on ChatGPT’s image generation that has a social feed. CEO Sam Altman has been privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project, our sources say. It’s unclear if OpenAI’s plan is to release the social network as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month.
