My opinion... if you have supported hardware there is not good reason not to. If you don't and are considering forcing it on, do a lot of research first but I would probably recommend against it.
I have already done a lot of research, and my results are as follows: If your CPU does not support the SSE4.2 instruction, you can´t run Windows 11 24H2, no matter what you do, so don´t waste time on this. To find out if the CPU supports SSE4.2, run CPU-Z. If SSE4.2 is supported, you can generally upgrade to Windows 11 using a UFD created by Rufus 4.6. Download an installation ISO from MS Media Creation Tool, run Rufus and point to this ISO, select all the customization options, and create the UFD. Create a backup image of the whole boot disk (or two), and then run setup.exe from the UFD. Once Windows 11 is installed, Windows Update will offer normal updates, but not upgrade updates (i.e., from 23H2 -> 24H2). To upgrade, follow the same Rufus procedure described above. If you use BitLocker to encrypt partitions, disable it before upgrading, or do a lot of research about this.
I just checked my 2nd generation Intel CPU. It supports SSE4.2. Win 11 24H2 is running on a MBR system.
I was holding out with W7 for as long as I could, but too many obstacles were being thrown in my way. Chrome browser said no more support for W7. I transitioned to Firefox and they at least provided ESR channel, then extended that support until March of 2025. AdGuard just announced they are dropping support for W7. Our medical portal was giving us fits and when I spoke to support personnel they said all problems I was having could be attributed to W7. I searched for a VPN and everyone I liked did not support W7. I could probably go on. Suffice it to say that when I finally purchased two new computers with W11, it was a relief. I had a bit of a learning curve, for sure, but I no longer felt like I was swimming against the current.
I never jump just for the sake of jumping. Windows 10 meets my needs so I don't feel it's necessary to upset the applecart. If Microsoft had their way I'd be saying how high every time they said jump.
The only thing that stops me from buying a new laptop (I really need 16GB RAM and a 16 inch screen) is Windows 11, because I've read so many bad stuff about it, and I'm afraid that many of my favorite apps won't work on it. Although I do have to say that all of my favorite apps that worked on Win 8.1, do work on Win 10, but I'm not sure how different Win 11 is compared to Win 10.
I'm on Win 11 Rasheed and I don't really have any problems with it. Perhaps you could say which apps are a must for you and someone might be able to confirm in works on Win 11.
Same old story about new operating systems: I like Windows 10, but Windows 11 is the latest and greatest, for me of course. People kept saying stay away from 24H2, it is full of bugs. The reality: nothing absolutely nothing is wrong. Maybe I’m lucky, but I must have been lucky for the last 15 years or so across many computers, different brand names. One thing for sure, I keep Windows ‘as is’. As to why Windows 11? Why not? The state of the art in technology is absolutely necessary, otherwise why use a computer at all. Windows XP was good, but Windows 11... You can’t even compare, let’s move on...
Without any specific details it's hard to say but I have not had any issues with apps that worked on Windows 10 not working on Windows 11.
As as far as being a member of a security forum, it is not even a question. 11 it is, since 10 is dead. I have been using 24H2 since April 2024 and no problems thus far, well not till GA, then new annoying settings kicked in, like the new date.
Time to buy a 16” MacBook Pro then! They come with 16 GB RAM by default now… https://www.apple.com/shop/buy-mac/macbook-pro/16-inch
Same. I tried out W11, hate the start menu and there is a bug with the vpns. My download was only 40mps in W11 and close to 800mbs with W10. I've read online that this happens to a lot of other people. I'll wait until W12?, since my LTSC is good until 2029...and if W12 is more of the same, i'll just go to Linux completely...
11 has many strange defaults, like it uses Realtek driver from 2017, it never updates by itself, there are also bad network defaults and protocols, I use SG TCP Optimizer and I disable everything except IPv4.
tcp optimizer is crap, and dont remove its made settings on removal. ip v6 is mandatory here, otherwise i get network issues in germany. in special if you use a router this tool resolves nothing for the web, only for the traffic to router
Hi I would like to ask for your advice on this subject. I have 3 computers with Windows 10 installed. I ran the CPU-z and got the following: 1. The first computer is a fairly old desktop computer. Its processor is I3-3220 (Cores 2, Threads 4) 2. The second computer has a processor I5-10400 (Cores 6, Threads 12) 3. The third is a DELL laptop, CPU I5-826SU (Cores 4, Threads 8 ) When running CPU-z on the three computers I get a fairly large list in Block "Instructions" like: MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE5, SSSe3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, EM64T, VT-X,.........etc. My question is: 1. Can I upgrade the computers to Windows 11 2. What update is possible 23H2 or 24H2
Are you kidding me, you pay so much and what do you get? A super ugly webcam notch! Also, I have worked with macOS, it's just too annoying for me, so I will probably stick with Windows. Now that I think of it, Win 12 might be worse than Win 11, so perhaps I should hurry up and buy a new machine.
Yes, I will need to do some research first. I already know that SpyShelter 12, which I'm very fond of, is not going to work, and the new SpyShelter isn't that good yet. I'm guessing that most of my old Win 32 apps will still work, since Win 11 is still closely related to Win 10. But I'm mostly worried about not being able to customize the Taskbar, but I just saw that Open Shell supports Win 11, but 7+ Taskbar Tweaker doesn't. https://ramensoftware.com/7-taskbar-tweaker-on-windows-11-with-windows-10s-taskbar
its I5-8265U each of it can run win11 because of sse4.2. but the i3 need manual upgrade with rufus and its tweaks. 23H2 is still supported until october'26, but you also can try 24H2 directly. i recommend a fresh setup after a full backup of windows 10.
